Iron Maiden Set List 2008 Tour

This was their set list in India... I can just see Steve Harris in
spandex pants with one leg up on the monitors!

01. Intro - Churchill's Speech
02. Aces High
03. 2 Minutes to Midnight
04. Revelations
05. The Trooper
06. Wasted Years
07. The Number of the Beast
08. Run to the Hills
09. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
10. Powerslave
11. Heaven Can Wait
12. Can I Play With Madness?
13. Fear of the Dark
14. Iron Maiden
-----------------------------
15. Moonchild
16. The Clairvoyant
17. Hallowed Be Thy Name

Its almost identical to the set from Live after Death!

I'd kinda like to see a couple of new ones in there to replace Moonchild,

heaven can wait and mariner though

- The reincarnation of Benjamin Brieg

- Pachendale

- Sign of the cross

- Bring your Daughter

- or

THE CLANSMAN!

If that's it, fuckin' wow -- those first few follow Live After precisely (except Trooper and Revelations are switched). I think that'd cause meltdown -- it's certainly my fave recording of theirs, live or studio.

Not a lot of new stuff there at all.

Ah, exactly the setlist we were expecting, featuring the Powerslave and Seventh era. The addition of the later Fear Of The Dark is a nice touch.

Anyone living or working out at Mascot should keep an eye out for Ed Force One, which is due to land Friday arvo. Pictures would be mucho appreciated.

Fucking good pics, and an awesome night at the BEC in Brisvegas. I want my own cyborg Eddie now, damnit. :|

Start of my half-written review...

A reputation for big sets, big explosions, even bigger guitar solos and some of the biggest metal songs in history. Tonight, at the Brisbane Entertainment, expectations were pretty much sky-high as metal legends Iron Maiden toured Australia for the first time since 1992 in a fashion that recalled the heady days of their legendary 1984/85 World Slavery Tour. They did not disappointment.

A mate was talking to Maiden's tour manager after the Melbourne gig and he said that Maiden will definitely be back next year and do New Zealand as well as Australia.

My guess is that it will be either a '25th anniversary of Powerslave' tour, or a tour to promote the release of "Maiden England" on DVD.

Bruce was telling the crowd in Brisbane that they'd "be back a lot sooner" next time round. He mentioned it more than once, actually, and seemed quite excited about the prospect.

They most certainly closed with Hallowed Be Thy Name, definitely one of the top 16 songs I heard that night

You Pete? No! You couldnt have!

Hallowed be thy name has to be the best stadium hair metal song going around. Closely followed by Fear of the dark.

It was all pretty fucking ace, tbh, Dex. My review of the Brisbane outing is just awaiting approval now. It's a minor opus in and of itself...

but i drove :-0

ah well, whilst i really enjoyed it i guess i weren't as impressed as most here, i had a gun spot up close enough to basically get eye contact in gold reserve (could easily feel the heat from the fire stacks) and occasionally got the vibe from stage that it was all too easy for them, just too formulaic... wish they'd for example extend the middle change in Can I Play With Madness or something like that.

and i'm sure bruce stuffed the 3rd line of the first verse of number of the beast and lost the rest of the song's passion from then on.

but Dex c'mon Dex, everyone know's no-one can beat Livin On a Prayer for best stadium hair metal song!

haha I do love a bit of the jovi, but seeing Slash get up on the piano for a solo during November rain makes me reach for some nasal delivery spray!

There’s even a niche in the rear wall for Nicko McBrain’s sigil-encrusted drumkit – a kit so massive that he’s hidden from the view of those in the general admission area.

No mean feat given the size of Nicko's girth these days.. did you see it on the video screens! ( i actually own a pair of his boxing trunks with the Killers Eddie on one leg that he couldn't fit into in the early 90s when they were made for him to drum in)

The guitars of Adrian Smith, Janick Gers and Dave Murray scream like engines, the bass of Steve Harris throbs like a machine gun

My biggest problem with the gig in Sydney (and i had a great spot!) was the lack of balls of the guitar sound.. .not the solos, they sounded great and were played to perfection, but the riffing just didn't cut the way i like it, too smooth, and i thought Jannick was a bit of a waste of space given every song they played (except possibly Fear of the Dark) was written for 2, not 3 guitars. The extra guy just seemed to make the others work less.

And it’s all delivered with effortless panache and a sense for the grandiose that’s been finely tuned by 30-plus years of performing.

This is exactly what i DIDN'T like about the gig, it was all TOO finely tuned and effortless, Adrian aside, the others just seem to do it too easy, their ex-drum tech i know very well basically agreed and reckons it's all very business and staged and very unchanging from night to night. It's more theatre than metal.

But good luck to them, i sound like i'm whinging but i had a great night all-the-same.

Yeah I kind of agree with hedonism gibbon. I thought the three guitars kind of drowned each other out. Maybe I wasn't close enough. I thought technically they did not live up to the hype, although it was still enjoyable it could have been better. You would expect that after palying together for so long.

I nearly had them locked in for the Gibbon Enclosure too! But Jannick wouldn't go within 3 miles of a beach!!!!!!!!

(and i didn't pay for the maiden gig - first ever total gratuity - and dunno really if i would have so i'm only stating why i thought it was "good" rather than "great", and i have, in different levels of intensity, been into Maiden since 81)

but yeah, the dirt-throwing of The Fumes and The Whiskey Go-Gos satified nicely Sunday night thanx!

they played stacks of newies, they were excellente as per usual. if you like overdriven blues, you WILL like the Fumes. I dig the Go-Gos quite a lot, they were unreal, but the Fumes are at another level of power and musicianship.

I'm gunna get a ticket to The Cruel Sea/The Vasco Era/The Fumes for March 14 i think at the metro. just do it!

go here for some post-fumes Great Escape goodness (you might even recognise someone!!) to see what kind of scenes a set of theirs can drum up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhaQZtZnXhc

...P.s. it goes for near-on ten mins so don't check if you only have a minute up your sleeve.

ok cheers (if I remember hahahaha!), will do... but the lady of the posse may get too keen to wait, she gets a bit ga-ga over at least one member of all three of those bands and wouldn't miss it for all the personally-signed tex perkins posters in Sydney

[quote=hedonism gibbon;188725]it's a top review.[quote]

Thanks man, praise is always appreciated. .

I think the whole 900-odd words boil down to "fuck it was the most awesome night." It's just all wrapped up in some prettier adjectives.

No mean feat given the size of Nicko's girth these days.. did you see it on the video screens! ( i actually own a pair of his boxing trunks with the Killers Eddie on one leg that he couldn't fit into in the early 90s when they were made for him to drum in)
No, I did not! Usually, I try to pay a fair bit of attention to the drummers, because I think really physical drumming adds to a performance, but for the most part I was too busy watching all the solos or Dickinson ... or headbanging like a crazyman.

I was about 20 rows back in the front section at Brisbane. At times, I did find it hard to track who was playing what. My initial, but perhaps mistaken, impression was that it did seem to make for a lusher, more complete sound than the Live After Death recording. But that's just my opinion.

I would have loved to have had the opportunity to have seen it twice so I could take in more of the nuances in how the songs were arranged on the second go-around.

They could always toss out Jannick and go back to the classic five-piece line-up. :> Except I expect that would cause an internal storm. Probably not best to rock the boat when it's sailing smoothly!

I don't think it's whinging; it's a valid point.

I'd never, ever seen Maiden before -- they never came to Brisbane in '92, and, well, World Slavery? I think I would have been all of 10 years old back then...

So, for me, it was all fresh and new and exciting. I expect it was for a lot of other people as well.

By the same token, I love an element of the impromptu in a gig. If I saw Somewhere In Time again, I'd still be impressed, but I don't think I'd be as blown away as I was this time if there was no variation in the arrangement (and I don't mean simply swapping around a few songs).

The band did look as though they were having fun, though. It was very, very slick, but I don't think they were simply going through the motions. I feel that helps counterbalance the slickness of the production.

if i missed it and then later read your review i'd have been spewing big-time!!!!

i too would have loved to see them twice to gauge it better (once form a seat and once from the floor ideally)

i guess being into megadeth more than maiden, i prefer "cut" to "lushness"... the sound was pretty good for an arena, a bit more volume may have made it even better but i guess they have regulations for levels at such places where all ages can go.

about the band and their onstage persona/image, Dave is simply the nicest, most laid back dude on the planet i'm told (the day after the gig when i spoke with rusty their old drum-tech) and is the same on stage every night, and all smiles just like that in real life. Adrian is the rockstar hard living one still (the only one) basically doesn't know what day it is most of the time, hence needs to concentrate whilst playing (i like that image onstage). bruce is just a hyperactive kid, it shows onstage. apart from the screams not quite screeeeaaacccching as they used to, and the fuck-up of number of the beast in sydney, he was good. jannick i hear is the cock-sure knob of the band, not quite a wanker (you reckon rusty?!?!) but aloof and self-assured, up himself. you could tell the way he prances onstage, doing fuck all except the odd solo (quite well) and a few big chords that anyone could strum. Nicko still drums well but boy, check out the spare type if your get a chance. that stool must be reinforced (sorry nicko).

i reckon they should have ditched jannick for this tour and really taken it back to the EIghties totally rather than doing it 90-95%... then brought him back for the next one when they go back to their more modern music.

i missed out on meeting them like i half-expected (got an apology, it could still happen next tour if it's better spread out - these days they try to avoid two shows in two nights so they can be at their best every night) cos apparently sydney was a bit of a hit and run mission. maybe they were in a better mood at your show. but they flew in that arvo (from asia i think, but could be wrong there) and straight back out after the sydney show.

between you and me i missed quite a bit of the visuals from headbanging too!

2 minutes to midnight is possibly the best riff to headbang to ever! it's like van halen's panama meets megadeth's peace sells, but written before both of them.

Right on, 2 Minutes has been my ringtone since the double-header in Sydney. I love it everytime the phone rings.

Although I might change it to Rime Of The Ancient Mariner...
