their Brisbane Harvest set was soooo terrible. The dynamics were completely off and the Front of House mix was only giving off guitar, vocals and hi hats. The bass, kick drum, snare, toms and keys got compeltely fucked up and was probably the only real disppointment of the whole day. About 15 others I spoke to thought the same.

Was right at the front on the barrier so the sound issues were probably not as bad from where I was. Thought the sound for the first few songs was a bit off but got better towards the middle to end of the set especially from Mean Spirits onwards. This is probably a choice based on heart and how much I have wanted to see them rather than how they actually played/sounded. I have spoken to many others that thought it was shit also but for me and my headspace at that time it made the ten.

fair enough. Yeah from where I was it was pretty bad, only got through two songs and they'd lost me by then.

Same for Sydney, the mix didn't feel right but they were still awesome.

I was front row for SOAD and I guess the energy and intensity of being right up the front as well as the emotional connection just made it pretty damn special for me. And the fact that Darron asked John to throw me a drumstick was awesome too.

Cheers man, your santa photo is rad.

I was with Blasted for the SSPU set and we were both totally blown away by how great it was. Maybe the sound was better up the front?

Couldnt agree more. She definitely levelled out the band coz the main synth dude to her left looked a bit dorky, but man did he have control of all those synths.
To me, it was like seeing studio music being performed live.

I thought the 1 hour set in Sydney was a great length. While I love seeing Ben Folds and seeing BF5 was one of the main bands I wanted to see, Chromatics put out a fantastic album this year and I do not regret my decision in choosing to see them. Definitely one of the highlights of the day and I will gladly see them again.

I believe he's referring to the Brisbane set which was just about to start as the infamous storm hit.
They managed to play for about 20 minutes or so once the storm had subsided and they reopened the gates.

well only about 20mins of Sigur Ros, I'm not much of a fan and the chick I dragged along to Black Angels with me really wanted to see Santigold so I went along with her. Santigold was really entertaining though and well Sigur Ros I found a little meh..

I think it was a poor idea to have Sigur Ros at a festival. It didn't feel right at all.

Can't comment on other venues but Sigur Ros at Riverstage was the perfect setting. Riverstage + 90 minute set = Happy DPLS.

I dunno. I saw Sigur Ros at the Riverstage and I felt it was a little disappointing, and believe me, I was actually looking forward to them the most.
There were some highlights but I felt overall the dynamics were off and the moments that shouldve been huge were lacking. I was really looking forward to hearing them play "Festival" live but in the end it just lacked the power that it had on record. Their new stuff; did however, sound really great.
I wish I had known that Grizzly Bear was pushed back, I would've loved to have been watching them instead.

Where were you standing out of curiosity? We were right infront of the sound desk and the sound literally blew me away for the entire performance. If you didn't have your dick blown off by Popplagio and Brennistein then I am surprised. Honestly cannot fault their set at all.

I am pretty sure they are legit. You just have old photos and a photo where it's mirrored. He started off with 2 dots on the left eye and 1 on the right, he has added two more dots since.

Previous awards: 2009, 2010, 2011

Best merchandise sold by a 2012 touring band:
A$AP Rocky nipple pasties

Biggest change in band/sound between viewings:
Gotye (To winning most disappointing live act for Homebake 2011 to possibly the best Australian band touring atm)

Most overused support act:
PVT (great, but they are going to be stuck supporting more popular bands than them for the rest of their careers)

Most underappreciated gig (where turnout did not reflect the awesome onstage):
DEVO @ Sydney Entertainment Centre

The Billy Bragg Memorial Award (International Act who made it very clear they wanted to GTFO of Australia):
Justin Bieber (It honestly seems like he is well and truly over pop music)

Biggest Load Blown (My personal fan orgasm moment):
Radiohead @ HP Pavillion, San Jose + others

Australian Act That Deserves International Recognition Yesterday:
The Bamboos

Most inappropriate response by a crowd to an act:
People actually enjoying Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

Best cover:

Single most-memorable, thing-I-will-tell-my-grandchildren moment:
Hologram Tupac

Live act most likely to convert haters with their performance:
Girl Talk (closely followed by Bon Iver)

Most Unintentionally Hilarious:
Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre (for all the awesome, there was equal measure stupidity from 50 Cent, Eminem, Tupac Hologram, Wiz Kalifa's huge-ass blunt...)

The King Of Limbs Shield for most disappointing live act:
The whole of Beck's Song Reader

Worst live act:
Seth Sentry

Best live act:
Refused

Right. Let's do this shit.

Best merchandise sold by a 2012 touring band:
Gaga actually sold Born This Way jackets. It was awesome.

Biggest change in band/sound between viewings:
City and Colour. In 2008: Just Dallas, solo, with Plain White Ts blaring in the background. In 2012: Full band, full sound, glorious surrounds of the Enmore. A delight.

Most overused support act:
Fishing - these guys need their own shows, asap!

Most underappreciated gig (where turnout did not reflect the awesome onstage):
Where to begin? Jono Boulet, Raein, Die! Die! Die!, Little Scout, Defeater, Rosetta.

The Billy Bragg Memorial Award (International Act who made it very clear they wanted to GTFO of Australia):
Jean Grae, easily.

Biggest Load Blown (My personal fan orgasm moment):
Janelle playing Come Alive, tUnE-yArDs playing Bizness, Refused playing New Noise, The Beach Boys playing God Only Knows, Prince opening with Purple Rain. Some of my absolute favourite songs that I still can't believe I saw live.

Australian Act That Deserves International Recognition Yesterday:
Alpine, Bertie Blackman, The Smith Street Band, Jono Boulet

Most inappropriate response by a crowd to an act:
Anyone who was left sitting down when Beck busted out Where It's At at the State Theatre. Also, anyone who didn't give Royal Headache love at TBK shows.

Best cover:
Jamie Hay and the Smith Street Band covering Blueline Medic's "Making the Noveau Riche."

Grohl/Falkous Medal for Best Onstage Banter:
Denis from Refused. What a world champion.

Single most-memorable, thing-I-will-tell-my-grandchildren moment:
Watching the Beach Boys play God Only Knows.

Live act most likely to convert haters with their performance:
Nicki Minaj, Coldplay

Most Unintentionally Hilarious:
Lime Cordiale. That shit just can't be for real.

The King Of Limbs Shield for most disappointing live act:
Evanescence, Jean Grae, Feist

Worst live act:
Evanescence, Tyga, Jean Grae

Best live act:
Janelle Monae

Forever.
There ain't nobody that can sing like me...

october: Veruca Salt, Obscura Hail, Deep Sea Arcade, The Vines, Thesis, Sunnyboys, Courtney Barnett, Donny Benet, Outright,
FGWMWS, Yoke, Miley Cyrus, Reggie Watts, Buck 65, Hilltop Hoods, The Blurst of Times, Bluejuice, Lanie Lane, Briggs.

november: Radio Birdman, Thelma Plum, NOFX x2, The Living End, mowgli, Newtown Festival,

Guys they are stickers! After the Sydney show he took one off and stuck it on my cheek along with a couple of other guys in the front row. I still got it too - took it off cos just one looks like a mole not as cool..

Also second the tip about checking out Symmetry - Best cd for your car even better than the real drive soundtrack.

The 4th Annual Albert Santos Live Show Awards For Badassery and Other Grand Things! Presented by Shazie

Best merchandise sold by a 2012 touring band:
That I noticed: Dappled Cities tea towels (which I didn't even have enough money to buy, and then they came out and signed them for everyone)

Biggest change in band/sound between viewings:
Arctic Monkeys BDO 2009 -> Arctic Monkeys Enmore 2012. I told myself after the BDO show I would never see them live again, they seemed so disappointing. I gave them another chance though after people said they have seen much better performances from them and it seemed like an off show. The enmore show this year was fantastic and definitely one of the best of the year.

Most overused support act:
Probably Fishing.

Most underappreciated gig (where turnout did not reflect the awesome onstage):
Alt J at T in the Park. They were opening a side stage on the second morning and about 30 people max decided to see them. Was fantastic.

Also Chromatics at Harvest, but I can understand why people would be off watching BF5 + the start of Beck.

The Billy Bragg Memorial Award (International Act who made it very clear they wanted to GTFO of Australia):

The Dandy Warhols?

Biggest Load Blown (My personal fan orgasm moment):

M83 played sitting in Brisbane/Sydney/Sydney again/London

Radiohead playing 2 songs from The Bends, seeing We Were Promised Jetpacks in Scotland.

Australian Act That Deserves International Recognition Yesterday:

Usually said by most people, but Dappled Cities clearly needs some more recognition.

Most inappropriate response by a crowd to an act:

M83 @ Brisbane Laneway/Sydney Laneway/Metro Theatre/ London. Every single crowd was standing around not jumping while they played Sitting. didn't stop me (at least the Metro had a couple people join in with me eventually)

Best cover:

Chromatics playing Running Up That Hill @ Harvest. (Also because that's the only cover I can remember atm)

Grohl/Falkous Medal for Best Onstage Banter:

Matthew Caws from Nada Surf. What an awesome guy.

Single most-memorable, thing-I-will-tell-my-grandchildren moment:

Dancing around drunk with a bunch of Scots on the final day of T in the Park.

Live act most likely to convert haters with their performance:

Elbow

Most Unintentionally Hilarious:

Hoodlum Shouts (thanks for the reminder Ramone). White Shame + Tacos + Magpie + pulling out a didgeridoo at the most white shame moment = not a straight face.

The King Of Limbs Shield for most disappointing live act:

Any band that was the victim of bad mixing (eg. Neon Indian).

Worst live act:

Marilyn Manson, can't believe I had to stand through that.

Best live act:
M83

Didn't pay that much attention to merch, but these Smith Street Band shirts ruled

Biggest change in band/sound between viewings:
Ball Park Music. Played to about 50 people at the Northcote Social Club in 2011. Had the mainstage crowd at Splendour eating out of the palms of their hands. Great to see.

Most overused support act:
Smith Street Band or Cavalcade. Love them both to bits, but some variation would be wonderful.

Most underappreciated gig (where turnout did not reflect the awesome onstage):
Pour Habit/Totally Unicorn/Hightime @ The Tote

The Billy Bragg Memorial Award (International Act who made it very clear they wanted to GTFO of Australia):
No one that I can think of

Biggest Load Blown (My personal fan orgasm moment):
CAN I SCREAM?!

Australian Act That Deserves International Recognition Yesterday:
Smith Street Band

Most inappropriate response by a crowd to an act:
Fuckheads yewwwwwwing during the quiet parts of PJ Harvey songs.

Best cover:
Smith Street Band & Jamie Hay - Making The Nouveau Riche (Blueline Medic)/A Death In The Family - My Pal (GOD)

Grohl/Falkous Medal for Best Onstage Banter:
Warren Ellis (Dirty Three). Dat Everything's Fucked intro. My word.

Single most-memorable, thing-I-will-tell-my-grandchildren moment:
The Poison City Weekender. Everything about it was absolutely wonderful, never missing another one.

Live act most likely to convert haters with their performance:
Harmony. I dare you to come away from their show not thinking they're wonderful.

Most Unintentionally Hilarious:
Hoodlum Shouts. Shout out to BC for pointing out that the singer sounds like a magpie and making it difficult for me to take them seriously ever again.

The King Of Limbs Shield for most disappointing live act:
PJ Harvey (FUCKING FIGHT ME, SANTOS)

Worst live act:
Primal Scream were boring as fuck at Meredith

Best live act:
International: Refused
Local: Totally Unicorn

Not simple trolling, hers was genuinely the least impressive show that I can think of.

Best merchandise sold by a 2012 touring band:
Didn't pay any attention to merch so I'm going to have to say Refused t shirts.

Biggest change in band/sound between viewings:
Bloc Party 2009 > Bloc Party 2012. Saw them at Splendour in 2009 and it was crazy, so much energy and the atmosphere was great. Saw them this at The Zoo and the band were flat, butchered a few songs and Kele's voice struggled. However, I'm going to put it down to being jet lagged.

Most overused support act:
Last Dinosaurs? Seems like these fuckers were everywhere, whether it be their own shows or supporting.

Most underappreciated gig (where turnout did not reflect the awesome onstage):
Black Angels @ Harvest. Didn't intend on seeing them but they turned out to be awesome. Pity more weren't there.

The Billy Bragg Memorial Award (International Act who made it very clear they wanted to GTFO of Australia):

The Dandy Warhols.

Biggest Load Blown (My personal fan orgasm moment):

Sigur Ros @ Harvest and seeing Orbital drop Halcyon + On + On live.

Australian Act That Deserves International Recognition Yesterday:

Deap Sea Arcade. Not sure how popular they are overseas but they deserve it.

Most inappropriate response by a crowd to an act:

Refused @ Eatons Hill. Needs moar mosh.

Best cover:

Deep Sea Arcade - Let Forever Be (The Chemical Brothers)

Grohl/Falkous Medal for Best Onstage Banter:

Dennis Lyxzen.

Single most-memorable, thing-I-will-tell-my-grandchildren moment:

Hoppipolla into Meo Bloonasir.

Live act most likely to convert haters with their performance
:

Refused or Sigur Ros

Most Unintentionally Hilarious:

Not sure on this one..

The King Of Limbs Shield for most disappointing live act:

Bloc Party

Worst live act:

The Dandy Warhols

Best live act:

Sigur Ros
