Biggest Popstar of the Century (so far)

Who would we say has been the biggest popstar of the century so far (2000 inclusive for the pedantic people out there)

the best measure of the success of any popstar is often how many hit songs they've produced amongst other more subjective and difficult to measure aspects. a number 1 says a lot too. also it's probably best to judge this based on their success in Australia since 2000.

there are 4 standouts for me:

Beyonce

as a solo act:
4 Top 5 albums that have gone platinum a total of 8 times
12 Top 10 singles that have gone platinum a total of 19 times with one #1.

with Destiny's Child:
2 Top 5 album - 4 times platinum
9 Top 10 singes - 8 times platinum with one #1.

Britney

6 Top 5 albums - 10 times platinum with one #1.
16 Top 10 singles - 11 times platinum with four #1s.

Lady Gaga

3 Top 5 albums - 8 times platinum with two #1s.
10 Top 10 singles - 27 times platinum with three #1s.

RIhanna

3 Top 5 albums - 8 times platinum.
21 Top 10 singles - 40 times platinum with seven #1s.

i would argue each has a fair claim to the throne. Beyonce for her longevity and consistency across her group and solo projects but lack of #1s hurt. Britney has the longevity and the #1s but she has significant slumps in career. Lady Gaga has the shortest career of all but has amassed an incredible number of hits in that time. Rihanna purely in terms of numbers blows everyone else out of the water but a lot of her success is down to big collaborations.

have i forgotten anyone?

Still refuse to believe you're not on the spectrum.

Considering the short amount of time it took her to become ubiquitous I'd go with Lady Gaga.

But on a personal level my favourite would be Bey.
This song is for the guy who keeps yelling from the balcony, and it's called "We Hate You, Please Die".

May: Super Wild Horses - June: Thundercat, King Khan and BBQ Show, Lil B, Boris
July: Dick Diver, You Am I, James Blake
August: Japandroids - October: ATP-Release The Bats, The Breeders

Putting aside the fact I don't like her work is it worth throwing Pink/P!nk's name into the ring?

yeah Pink is a contender particularly in Australia. she has 18 Top 10 singles with 5 of those being #1. her albums have gone 28 times platinum as well. maybe i forgot her initially because the thought of her immense success in this country is disturbing.

Really? You're "throwing Pink into the ring" right after oldgregg's post? These forums are filthy!

But really what the hell is going on with this thread.

I didn't know Rhianna had 21 songs, let alone 21 hit singles.

Probably Britney.

I read a Guardian thing last year that suggested that at this early stage you could split the diva title into a three-way race: Adele, Gaga and Beyonce, being the Ego, Id and Super-Ego respectively. Rihanna is the wild-card as she has a bit of all three in her.

it is well known on this forum that i worship the ground this man walks (there's a jesus walks pun in there somewhere i'm sure) but he really falls into that area where success is subjective and difficult to measure. if we were talking about influence, consistency and originality there's little doubt in my mind that he is one of the greatest popstars of all time. (imma let you finish etc etc) but you can't really measure those things easily, not at least so soon after his peak.

but i think (at least hope) in 20/30 years time he might be remembered as a legendary artist in the same realm as Bowie, Dylan and Springsteen.

We're only talking about individual popstars.

Not boybands.

once you get her boobs out of the way. Katy Perry has a pretty strong claim.

A number 1 album with sales that have sent her 5 times platinum
10 Top 10 singles including two #1s and 28 times platinum.

but her US credentials are incredible. over 3 million albums sold, out of the 11 singles she has released 7 have gone to #1 and gone platinum 29 times over. remembering that in the US platinum equals 1 million sales.

and how the fuck did i forget Madame Swift!! give her a few more years and i'm sure she'll have her place alongside the ladies already mentioned. she's still getting there in Australia. but in the US her albums have gone 15 times platinum with two #1s, her EPs have sold over a million as well and she's had songs go 23 times platinum.
