There’s nothing better than to hear a familiar Australian twang singing back to you while you’re in amongst a crowd of people at a gig. And what better dynamic voice to achieve this than Jake Grigg, the lead singer of Something with Numbers. I always find myself to be feeling more Australian when I hear a proud countryman on the radio or at a live gig.
But you can make your own assessment of Something with Numbers rock prowess when they embark on their national – œGoodbye Mickey Finn’ tour, presented by Channel V and FasterLouder.com.au The tour is in aid of the latest single released by the band last week and lyrically speaking, Jake says it’s”- œthe most powerful song on the record.” This symbolic song sets the scene for the whole tour running from April 29th till 7th July.
Jake was definitely excited about the up and coming tour when I spoke with him and they are gearing up to play at a lengthy list of venues. “Finally we get to play basically every night for a few months,” was Jake’s impression of the tour. First, the band will perform in Victoria and make their way across the country, crisscrossing from state to state, even making sure they touch ground in Tasmania. They end their tour in the Central Coast, having performed in every capital and over 30 regional cities around Australia. Their last tour was sold out so this time they are stepping up a notch and playing in bigger venues, playing more often and hoping for larger crowds. It just goes to show how the once unknown – œemo’ band from the Central Coast has transformed into a successful punk rock powerhouse, a reality Jake thought would never happen to him.
Supporting their headlining tour are The Inches from Melbourne, whom Something with Numbers saw a few months ago and were so impressedby that they asked them to join the tour. Also playing are The Lazys from the Central Coast. This is only their first tour but Jake reassured that “they are an awesome band.” Adding (It will be a) pretty fun tour I reckon. We made a pact that we don’t want to tour with bands unless they are nice people. We want to show people that we have fun doing what we do.’ And it has always been said that you perform better if you are having fun.
You may recognise Jake from the new Channel V programme The Rock Room, which he co-hosts with James Mathieson or from the band’s storming performance earlier this year at Big Day Out, where the crowd went crazy for them. The latest album Perfect Distraction hit #34 on the ARIA chart last year so on this tour you can expect to hear a mixture of the latest chart-climbing songs to some their earlier efforts. Jake also mentioned that a surprise was in order for those who attend the shows but he was extra careful not to reveal too much. He only added that it will be “something we have never done before so it’s pretty exciting but I can’t really say anything about it.”
So no matter where you are in Australia be sure to buy some tickets to the – œGoodbye Mickey Finn’ tour, get pumped to have a good time and make sure you are ready to sing along to good Australian music.
