The titular ‘Adelle’ may or may not be the girl each banmember lost their virginity to, but either way the all the hard work done by this Brisbane four-piece becomes clear as day when listening to their debut long player When Your Vices Aren’t Vices. Formed when they were still in high school, Adelle have been around for just over a year but display a knowledge and wisdom that is well beyond their years.

So what made four guys from Logan name their band after a girl? The decision for the name was made by Mike, guitarist and singer for the band. “It gives us a clean slate to work with, as there are no connotations on girls names,” he says.

While the band doing all their own engineering and production on their first release, their control over their own creative output doesn’t stop there: they also did all their own artwork. Mike confirms that it was a grueling experience. “It was a lot of hard work to manage everything, and during that period we kind of lost grip on reality. But it was a great experience!”

When Your Vices Aren’t Your Vices features a real collage of rocking fast tempos, acoustic melodies and musical influences that take in Incubus, Brand New and Grinspoon. “We’re not doing anything completely different, but we like to think we’re putting a new spin on it.” While it required some of the band members to step out of their comfort zone, Miike said the whole thing just seemed to come together in the end.

The lyrical content of the release is quite dark, according to Mike. “I’m not an unhappy or depressed person I think, it just reflects some of my frustrations within music and the industry.” In spite of this disatisfaction, the band say are happy to work their way to the top, but they say they’ve already surpassed all their expectations: wherever they go from here will be a bonus.

Adelle offer a free download of their music on their MySpace page and say to keep your eyes peeled for another short five-song release mid-year. They’ve got live shows coming up, and with certain members suffering broken bones they should be an interesting shows to say the least!

Adelle play the Alley Bar on Friday the 4th May and the Grudge Club, Southport, on Friday the 11th May.
