If a 10th birthday is a reason for a party, Melbourne’s 28 Days are certainly throwing a big one. Starting in March and going for the next three months the 28 Days boys are throwing 40 parties travelling across every state.
Bassist Damian Gardiner tells Fasterlouder “it’s the biggest tour we’ve ever done, which is kind of weird, being that part of our career now.” But just because the band is an old hand at touring don’t expect their to be anything less than a full on energised show. ”The tour is going to be a very physical tour, lots of jumping around and going crazy on stage, showing the kids how the pros do it,” he says.
Celebrating their huge success over the last 10 years, the tour and Best of album promises 28 Days’ fans possibly the last chance to see them live. Damo says the band have big plans for this tour, “We are going to try and incorporate a broader spectrum of music that we’ve played throughout the years. For years and years people have wanted to hear a lot of songs we haven’t played because we’ve been too lazy to rehearse them. So we’re actually going to get off our arses and learn a huge array of songs. We want to be able to pick from 50 songs for this tour.”
After 10 years of highs, playing on the US Vans Warped tour, numerous Big Day Out shows, Gold and Platinum selling albums and ARIA nominations, one highlight still stands out for Damo. The first time we stepped off a plane at Osaka airport and loaded our gear into a hire van, drove to the venue and the first time we plugged in and played at a venue overseas. It was only a little club in Osaka, that was just unbeatable. Anything we’ve done before or after just doesn’t compare to that.”
What comes next after a 40 show, three month tour for 28 Days? Sadly Gardiner confirms that this tour marks the end of the band’s touring days “I don’t know if it’s the concrete end of the band, but we will be very very quiet for at least a year. We might come back and do the odd show here or there. It will be a much quieter 28 days.”
However, fear not devoted fans; “We do want to do a best of DVD, we’ve got a new When Dickheads Snap DVD we want to put out and obviously over the next three months of touring there will be a lot of Dickhead Snaps footage. We also have a lot of Demos, we’ve probably got 15 or so alright sounding demos, we might just do a big DVD with a couple of hours of footage and a bonus cd of demos, songs that never made it and stuff people have never heard.
“If you want to come and see 28d I’d make this the time to come and see 28 days, because I can’t promise that we’ll ever play in your town again, wherever that may be.”
After 10 years what exactly does 28 Days mean to Gardiner: “28 Days means getting to do what I love to do – play bass, write songs with four of my best mates. It’s been the biggest chunk of my life, it means everything to me.”
To all the 28 Days fans who’ve supported the band throughout the last 10 years Gardiner expresses his heartfelt thanks: “Thank you so much for 10 years of the most awesome times. 28 Days fans anywhere are the best. To all the 28 Days fans out there just keep being yourselves, keep coming to shows, keep getting drunk and if you find another band you want to make your new 28 Days just keep being your typical 28 Days fan. We love you for it.”
