10 likely Splendour In TheGrass 2014 headliners

With the Splendour In The Grass lineup announcement due in less than a month, we look at 10 potential headliners.

Outkast

UPDATE 21/4: Outkast have leaked their place on the Splendour bill

Not long after Outkast reformed to headline Coachella in April and New York’s Governor’s Ball festival in June, the Atlanta hip-hop duo announced a 2014 “world festival tour” set to take in 40-dates around the globe. While not all of those stops have been revealed yet, the tour does include Fuji Rock in Japan which takes place on the same weekend as SITG and has regularly shared headliners with the festival. In 2012 the two festivals both featured sets from Jack White, At the Drive-In, The Kooks, Gossip, The Shins, Django Django, Michael Kiwanuka, and Explosions in the Sky.

Jack White

UPDATE: Jack White has been ruled out.

Jack White headlined Splendour in the Grass in spectacular fashion back in 2012, but there are lots of signs pointing to a triumphant return to Byron for the former White Stripe this year. After an extended period of time off the festival circuit, White has recently announced a series of performances at The Governor’s Ball in New York, Oshega Festival in Canada and Bonnaroo in Manchester. White is said to be working on the followup to his debut solo album Blunderbuss, with new music expected later this year.

Foster The People

Packing out a side stage at Woodfordia, Foster The People were the one of the most talked about acts of Splendour 2011 and it seems likely they’ll be touring Australia in 2014. In fact, the band has said as much themselves. “We’ll be back this year,” frontman Mark Foster told FL’s Perri Cassie last week. And with a headline set locked in for Fuji Festival, a return to Splendour is definitely on the cards.

The Black Keys

The Black Keys were last on our shores for a run of headline shows in 2012 and despite initially being rumoured as a possible replacement for Blur at the Big Day Out are yet to announce their Australian return. The two-piece have just released new single ‘Fever’ and are set to drop their seventh album Turn Blue on May 13. To launch the record they have confirmed a stack of festival shows, but have nothing scheduled after their appearance in the UK on July 20.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey was last in Australia for Splendour (and Spin Off Festival) in 2012. While she was rumoured to have been quitting music in August last year, the singer has since released new single ‘Once Upon A Dream’ and confirmed she is working with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach on her new record, Ultraviolence, due out on May 4. In anticipation Del Rey has already started announcing international tour dates with a convenient gap in late July.

Damon Albarn

Damon Albarn disappointed thousands of Blur fans when his band pulled out of the Big Day Out in January. While the likelihood of the Britpop legends returning is slim, with his debut solo record, Everyday Robots, due out in May a stand-alone tour from the singer is very likely. Only last week he told the New Zealand Herald: “I fully intend to come back and play there [Australia] again.”

Frank Ocean

Lorde put on such a memorable performance at Splendour 2013, it was almost easy to forget that she was there in place of Frank Ocean. After playing one less-than-perfect sideshow in Melbourne, Ocean was forced to cancel his scheduled Splendour set due to a tear in his vocal chords. While the rapper doesn’t currently have any live dates scheduled he still “owes” Splendour organisers (and his fans) a return visit.

Broken Bells

Since releasing After The Disco in February – the first Broken Bells record in four years – Danger Mouse and James Mercer have been back on the festival circuit. The pair have performances scheduled at Coachella, New York’s Governor’s Ball and Bonnaroo – plus a sizeable Splendour-sized gap in late July. While Broken Bells have never played Splendour, Mercer’s “other” band The Shins have played at the festival twice.

London Grammar

You can pretty much lock this one in. Back in December London Grammar told The Vine they were in fact originally slated to play Splendour last year, but couldn’t make it work so were planning to come back in 2014: “We were supposed to play it this year but they couldn’t get us out there in time,” they revealed. “It wasn’t going to work, so I think it’s always been the plan to go back next year.”

Sky Ferreira

Back in January, Sky Ferreira let slip that she was planning a trip to Australia in time for Splendour, telling triple j “I’m definitely coming in July for a festival, I think. I’m not quite sure [of the exact date], but it’s in my summer.” She later played down those rumours, but on her recent promo visit to Sydney she revealed in an FL Q&A that a July tour was back on the cards: “I might come back in July but it’s to be confirmed.”

Outkast, Jack White, Black Keys and London Grammar would all make me a happy punter.

Sky Ferreira, London Grammar and Foster the People are not headliners...

But I think Outkast and The Black Keys would be a good step up from last year and should be the size of headliners Splendour has.

Jack White, Outkast, Black Keys, Franky Ocean and London Grammar would be too good. You could book me in for the 3 day affair if that was the case.

Nah, Casablancas is a human. A shot is the firing of a gun or cannon, a hit/stroke/kick of the ball in sports such as basketball/tennis/golf, or a small amount of straight alcohol consumed in one gulp.

pretty drab short list. Jack is nice, but was only just here two years ago at the same festival? Thats a pretty short recycle cycle.

Frank would be nice, but other than that pretty dull. Couldnt see London Grammar as headliners.

Oh I forgot to mention I'm not much a fan of Outkast. Would be good festival vibe though.

Jack White should be here every year.

yeah, i can see that it would be a solid choice to book him. I guess thats just the festival industry at the moment. No risks. Laneway seems to be my only sure bet for festivals as of late.

Slowdive are playing Fuji Rock, that makes them likely/maybe contenders for Splendour?

Not as headliners, but would love to see them come over here!

Okay, so tell us who you think is big enough to headline Splendour, but could be seen as a risk.

Damn it. I know Sigur Ros have stopped touring but could they potentially come out for a one off show? They never did tour Kveikur here...

Beck, Black Keys, Outkast is a more likely scenario tbh. Kings of Leon is another possibility, but its way too soon for Jack White to be back.

gumbuoy

Because, we hate international artists who come here too often? After all, think of all those hundreds of times he toured here with White Stripes. We were really getting sick of him.

clements95

clements95 said on the 30th Mar, 2014

It's not at all because we don't want him back. But surely Splendour wouldn't repeat a headliner two years after they just had him. It's not impossible but I just wouldn't think it likely.
