FL's Top 50 Albums of2013

10. Dick Diver – Calendar Days

What we said: “Dick Diver can buff the mundane till it shines and are unapologetic about arrangements that sit at the easy end of the listening scale. But maybe the best part is that age has yet a burden to them.”

9. Jagwar Ma – Howlin'

What we said: Howlin’ is not just a great album, though, it’s a great album that’s every chance of outlasting the wave of hype that has carried it into the collective consciousness. Jagwar Ma manage to sound contemporary without leaning too conspicuously on any of-the-moment sounds to achieve that result. Years from now, when we’re cringing at the drops, the air-raid synths and the wub-wub bass that we all momentarily fell for, ‘The Throw’ will still be slaying the dance-floor at your nephew’s wedding.

8. Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City

What we said: “Jam-packed with religious and historical references, the articulate Koenig embraces his literary savviness and manages to illuminate life’s minutiae in a manner that gives even the most trivial situations a bigger-picture gravitas.”

7. Arctic Monkeys – AM

What we said: As usual, Arctic Monkeys doesn’t sound particularly fussed. And more than ever, they sound unafraid to appear uncool. Recording in California with producer James Ford (who lent a basement dankness to 2011’s Suck It and See ) and a co-producer in Sheffield fixture Ross Orton, the quartet dig unashamedly into classic rock and pay homage to Black Sabbath more than once. There’s the feeling that they’ve got a loyal fan base and now can just be the band they want to be, without sweating new converts.

6. The Drones – I See Seaweed

What we said: “‘I See Seaweed’ often feels less like a rock album and more like a demented film score.”

5. Daft Punk – Random Access Memories

What we said: “Random Access Memories is a love letter: to people, to moments, and to music itself. It may be less forward than Daft Punk’s previous records, but it’s the best one to take home at the end of the night.”

4. Violent Soho – Hungry Ghost

What we said: The fingerprints of Shihad, Japandroids, Wavves, Bleeding Knees Club, Blink-182 and Children Collide variously appear through the record, which strikes an excellent balance between melodic and heavy elements throughout. The common denominators are palatability and professionalism – even at their rawest, Hungry Ghost-era Violent Soho exude a subtle radio-ready sheen that shows they are ready to step further into the mainstream realms of Australian music.

3. Kanye West – Yeezus

What we said: The more people hate Kanye West the more hungry he sounds. After lazily loping through his own subconscious on 808s & Heartbreak, Taylor Swiftgatehappened and he had to record My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to prove to us that he was worth all the trouble. Which he did, handily. And now that he’s made both an album showing off all his talented friends and Watch the Throne, an album where respectable family man Jay-Z endorsed him at length, he gets to cut loose again. But instead of lazy indulgence, this time what came out is rage.

2. Queens of the Stone Age – …Like Clockwork

What we said: “Homme sounds sarcastic and doomed, by which I mean he sounds like a rockstar.”

1. Lorde – Pure Heroine

What we said: “The rise and rise of Lorde has ostensibly been the narrative of the unlikely pop star, a sensation who was raised a world away from the Disney-fied teen dream factory. In this context, Lorde is the pop superstar least likely. But things have changed (they always do), and Ella Yelich-O’Connor, a Kiwi who is but a month away from finally shedding the “only 16” tag, is The Pop Star Of 2013. And it makes sense.”

And Jose would then have been called much, much worse than that.

i liked the attitude of arcade fire, give a change in is sound, but to be the best album of the year, it's ridiculous. they are to move in a land shaky, not the land of them!!lol

Good to see Adalita in there.

damo65

damo65 said on the 6th Dec, 2013

My actual fave albums of the year are not here, but that's fine. At least I haven't got the hatred for the top ten I had last year. No Karnivool is a bit of a shocker. No Birds, either. Both were #1 albums, but obviously not as good as Artic Monkeys, eh, FL?! And seriously, Lorde?! Album of the year?!

berlinchair101

berlinchair101 said on the 6th Dec, 2013

Nothing involving Ian Kenny can possibly touch the calibre of Arctic Monkeys at their worst.

No, the whole thing is a practical joke, aimed directly at you.

sucking up indie's arse again. just because the record companies and publicity gives you the most money is no reason to ignore other genres. no don walker? that was the best album and gig of the year, more than held his own with kinky friedman on the previous night and dale watson the night after. also the vandemonian lags live show, album and dvd for dark mofo was something unique.

It was probably lunch of the year to be fair.

I think it's the only lunch I went to this year with live music from known performers. The other musician who played was Wes Carr.

I'm sure it's just co-incidence that Lorde's album was advertised heavily in the banners and got the #1 ranking.
