The 10 greatest hits from theGTA V soundtrack

You’ve lined up at midnight, waited by the mailbox, or watched the download timer to crawl to 100 percent. Now it’s time to delve into arguably the biggest entertainment release of the year. But with three protagonists, a sprawling map, a cast of shady characters and a intertwining narrative to navigate, things can get a little overwhelming when first dropping in to the fictional locale of Los Santos.

To make things easier when it comes to tuning in to the many hours of radio soundtrack, LACHLAN KANONIUK lets you in on the top 10 tracks to keep an ear out for while cruising around in your questionably-attained vehicle of choice.

10. Eddie Murphy – ‘Party All The Time’

Station: Space 103.2

A hilariously misguided assault on the pop charts from the hottest comedian in the mid-1980s, ‘Party All The Time’ is assisted by the Superfreak himself, Rick James, and what we can only assume is an ungodly amount of cocaine. Though the smooth party vibes do make us long for a touch of Sydney’s Donny Benet on the in-game radio waves.

9. Fergie Feat. Ludacris – ‘Glamorous’

Station: Non Stop Pop FM

Rockstar nail the crest of nouveau-nostalgia with a track that may have been a guilty pleasure when it dropped back in 2007, but listening back now, it’s just plain good. “If you ain’t got no money take yo broke ass home!” Sing along, you know you wanna.

8. Jay Rock Feat. Kendrick Lamar – ‘Hood Gone Love It’

Station: Radio Los Santos

A euphoric cut from Black Hippy’s Jay Rock and K-Dot, 2011’s ‘Hood Gone Love It’, is one of the oldest selections on Los Santos’s contemporary hip hop station – and it’s one of the best. The perfect soundtrack to a sundrenched cruise in between missions.

7. Thee Oh Sees – ‘The Dream’

Station: Vinewood Boulevard Radio

Thee Oh Sees’ live staple invariably sends the bodies flying on the dancefloor, and things are no different in Los Santos. Except replace dancefloor with sidewalk. Seriously this track is pure aural adrenaline, fitting nicely among the Wavves-DJed playlist of Vinewood Boulevard Radio.

6. Pulp Vs Soulwax – ‘After You’

Station: Soulwax FM

Originally released as a limited-edition 12” as part of this year’s Record Store Day, Soulwax work their Pulp reworking into their very own station. Plus Jarvis Cocker’s delivery of the line “I fall to the floor as she’s shaking her booty” will help make you feel like less of a creep for any in-game nefarious conduct.

5. Jai Paul – ‘Jasmine’

Station: Radio Mirror Park

An alleged victim of Grand Theft Laptop earlier in the year, enigmatic singer-producer Jai Paul lends one of his two officially released tracks to the chillwave-heavy station Radio Mirror Park. We should also be thankful that station DJ Twin Shadow doesn’t spin anything from his tedious second LP.

4. Queen – Radio Ga Ga

Station: Los Santos Rock Radio

Look, it’s no ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, or ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ for that matter. But it’s Queen, goddammit. The only problem is resisting the urge to drop the controller and clap along to the chorus.

3. Bob Seger – Night Moves

Station: Los Santos Rock Radio

The all-time greatest dad rock tune finds its way onto Los Santos’s Gold FM equivalent. I can’t think of a context within the game where this track wouldn’t be an apt backing track. Chasing the sunset across the desert? Lovely. Pulling of a blood-soaked heist? Brilliant.

2. Warren G Feat. Nate Dogg – ‘Regulate’

Station: West Coast Classics

A fitting soundtrack for a homecoming to Grove Street (the setting of GTA: San Andreas, for the uninitiated), the ultimate G-funk classic is one of many highlights on the well-stacked classic hip hop station.

1. The entirety of FlyLo FM

The station helmed by Flying Lotus doesn’t hold back, featuring original compositions from Tyler, The Creator, Clams Casino, Hudson Mohawke, plus a bevy of FlyLo’s back catalogue. The mix also includes an eclectic inclusion of acts such as OutKast, DJ Rashad, FlyLo’s Captain Murphy alter-ego, and to top it all off, Aphex Twin’s ‘Windowlicker’.

I was going to make a realy snarky comment about this list untill I got to Bob Seger. Rarely do I see Bob get some love.
Night Moves is a classic, awesome track about boobs and fucking. Believe.
