For those of you who are not familiar with the Aussie band Full Scale it’s time to fill you in on who they are and why they rock.
Full Scale is Ezekiel Ox (vocals), Crutey (drums), Jimmy Tee (guitars) and Robkaay (bass). The band originated in Perth where they went by the name “Full Scale Deflection” and released the album ‘Symptoms of Chaos’. They have since shortened their name to simply Full Scale and have relocated to Melbourne where all four members have settled in extremely well.
In March of 2003, Full Scale released an EP titled ‘Black Arrows’ and in August the same year they released the follow up EP, ‘White Arrows’. Both albums got rave reviews all round and established Full Scale into the Australian music scene as a band to look out for in the future.
They have recently been signed to US/international booking agency, The Agency Group, who also take care of the likes of Evanescence, Mike Patton and Drowning Pool.
I was lucky enough to catch up with the guitarist for Full Scale, Jimmy Tee, who was happy to answer questions about what it’s like to be Full Scale at the moment.
Firstly congratulations on where you guys are at, at the moment. It must be very exciting to be in such talented shoes. You write original tunes and support them with great music and vocals. Many have categorised you in the nu-metal/melodic category. Is this where you see Full Scale?
J- Firstly, thankyou and secondly, I think we are Heavy Rock, although I dont think we are easily categorised. You could say New Rock as well.
You’ve been compared to groups such as ‘System Of A Down’ and ‘Rage Against The Machine’ what do you make of these comparisons?
J- I see us as having taken bits and pieces of those bands and incorporated it into our sound, along with many other bands.
You’ve done some work with Clint Boge of the ‘Butterfly Effect’ on your Black Arrows EP, any plans to work with anyone else in the future?
J- We can never rule out anything, especially with some of the people we’ve met recently. I’d like nothing more than to have Paige Hamilton (Helmet) or Slash (Velvet Revolver) bust out some shit on our next album.
You’ve been touring with a lot of big acts lately (Evanescence, Sevendust just to name a few), can you describe what these experiences have been like?
J- They were both awesome experiences and the professional attitude was great to learn from, but the partying, well that was more like us teaching them, those yanks had quite a lot to learn, and we taught them.
You guys are extremely energetic and powerful in your live shows, how is playing live shows different to recording?
J- Our live show is all about having fun, having a drink or whatever and rock’n out. You can get into the messages or sit back and get sucked into the power, we don’t really care, but recording is a whole different ball game. Recording at NRG studio’s, which was in North Holllywood recently, was like going to rock ‘n’ roll university. It was absolutely fucking mad how much help and assistance I had. 5 weeks tracking just for guitars, I had two assistants at all times, an engineer John Ewing (Linkin Park, Korn), and it was one of the best studio’s in world, so yeah, quite a bit different from a live show.
Is there a favourite song to perform?
J- I’m into “16 Today” which is about the children growing up in detention centres in South Australia and “The Sickness” which is about the human races habit of killing each other en masse on regular occasions throughout history.
Can you reveal to us any insides to the upcoming album on what we can expect?
J- Expect a raw, live and heavy sound with not much gloss or production really, we are what we are.
Is there a title for the upcoming album?
Maybe “Download The Destruction” but I prefer self titled, our name says it all I reckon.
What’s the one last thing you’d like to say to our readers?
J- Try and give a fuck about the world around you, I know it might seem pointless sometimes but life has habit of going up and down, hang in there, and more importantly … Stay alive!!! there is no re-incarnation. Don’t fall for all the bullshit. Live each day like it’s your last.
