Celebrating Gotye’s UKnumber one hit

Between May 1980, when Wouter ‘Wally’ De Backer first arrived on this earth, and February this year there had been 27 UK chart topping hits performed by Australians. Now, using an adopted name in an adopted country ‘our Wally’ has claimed to the Top of the Pops in the United Kingdom himself (with some help from another adopted Aussie, Kimbra).

Yes, Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know has added a first place in the UK to an ever growing list of accolades that already includes a top place on the Hottest 100, adoration from Ashton Kutcher, 67 million Youtube views and a second placing on Switzerland’s Schweizer Hitparade. He’ll also win everything at the ARIAs this year and probably the AMP and Australian of the Year as well.

Gotye joins a list of notables to have held the top place on the UK charts that includes the likes of Bob the Builder (who has two number one hits), t.A.T.u., Crazy Frog, James Blunt, Sandi Thom and Mr Blooby. The last time an Australian performer reached such dizzy heights on the UK charts was way back on the 5th of February this year when Adelaide’s very own Sia Furler reached the top place singing a little tune called Titanium. Although it’s worth noting that Somebody That I Used To Know is the first Aussie duet to top the UK charts since Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan teamed up (with Stock, Aitken & Waterman) for Especially for You 1989.

Sadly Gotye won’t have a chance to perform on Top of the Pops (it was axed in 2006) but we hope that Gotye’s tune can stay at number one long enough to make up for the fact that Kylie’s classic Can’t Get You Out of My Head was rudely knocked out of first place on the charts in 2001 by bloody Afroman. (Sidenote – Afroman is almost certainly booked to headline Heatwave 2013.)

To celebrate Gotye’s UK success we’ve put together a Friday afternoon playlist of some of the great Aussie songs that have topped the charts in the land that for reasons unknown still occupies a hefty chunk of our national flag and a set of small islands off the coast of Argentina.

The Aussie invasion on the UK charts:

5th February 2012 (one week) – David Guetta featuring Sia “Titanium”

25th July 2010 (one week) – Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP “We No Speak Americano”
29th February 2004 (one week) Peter Andre featuring Bubbler Ranx “Mysterious Girl”

9th November 2003 (one week) Kylie Minogue “Slow”

5th May 2002 (one week) Holly Valance “Kiss Kiss”

23rd September 2001 (four weeks) Kylie Minogue “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”

16th December 2001 (three weeks) Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman “Somethin’ Stupid”

25th June 2000 (one week) Kylie Minogue “Spinning Around”

14th May 2000 (one week) Madison Avenue “Don’t Call Me Baby”

6th June 1999 (one week) Baz Luhrmann “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)”

1st December 1996 (one week) Peter Andre “I Feel You”

8th September 1996 (one week) Peter Andre “Flava”

19th May 1996 (one week) Gina G “Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit”

ugh shouldn't be proud at all of that craps really. but i like natalie imbruglia's torn. she didn't have to open her dress to show that she can sing. tina arena, where is she now?

because it was jason donovan's maybe :d. btw he will release his album in australia. polydor is trying to make amend of past mistake by not releasing his rocky 3rd album in australia. it's far away from his bubblegum cheesy pops of course.

i am a fan of give a good heart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mp2uz8LLYE not too many broken hearts nor sealed with a kiss. this is an underrated song from the underrated album. check it first, i want your opinion.

most of his uk base fans dislike his 3rd album because it's not pwl nor bubblegums and not too dancey. well i dislike his 1st and 2nd album and not too fond of his 4th and 5th album. and i don't know if i will like his 6th album, even it will be released through polydor records.

But what are your thoughts on bubblegum music?

Deannix

Deannix said on the 17th Feb, 2012

i don't like them. it's for pre teens. i like rock music. those who like to listen to bubblegums will have some difficulties to grow up, exactly like jason donovan's uk fans lol. they always demand him to sing his bubblegum hits and refused him to sing his new songs. that's why maybe rick astley retired, he didn't want to sing bubblegum songs forever :d.

it's bubblegum. once it lose its taste you have to throw it out.

but really, refusing the singer to grow up is crazy.

Deannix

Deannix said on the 17th Feb, 2012

not really. not every good singer will sing good songs that we like, right? i just enjoy good songs. some of scorpions's, some of bon jovi's, some of jason donovan's (3rd album only), some of il divo's, some of josh groban's. any good song that fits my ears will be ok for me. but sorry i don't like kylie minogue's songs :p. for me she is shrieking not singing.

gumbuoy

i like every Something For Kate song I've ever heard. and believe me, that's a lot.

of the other bands in my top 5, they all have at least an 80/20 good to bad ratio, but that 20 would never make me say "I'm not into X"

Deannix

i like jason donovan as rock singer actually, but hate his bubblegums. for kylie...no more comments. was neighbours really that popular in uk? in my country it was not that popular. and my country is closer to australia than uk.

or like tim minchin said on never mind the buzzcocks "....we exported the shit" :d

monokhrome_nite

Umm... no...

My favourite artist is Björk, and I can pretty safely say that pretty much everything I've heard by her is, at the absolute least, really interesting, but that's probably because I haven't heard the album she made when she was 11 years old.

Deannix

Deannix said on the 17th Feb, 2012

i think jason donovan's single like share my world was about in the same style as something fo kate. i don't know it was available in australia or not. poor guy, his uk fans never grow up because of his bubblegums. they always upset if someone says that his favourite singer had wasted his time by singing the crappy bubblegum pops.

by the way scorpions will retire after some times.

deja vu of sfk is fine i think. it's softer than the song that i watched before.

Deannix

Deannix said on the 17th Feb, 2012

not really. because scorpions will be disbanded :((. for jason donovan, if he will not care to look at his 3rd album, i will not look at his other songs at all. because most of them are boring and craps.
