Soundwave feuds and clashes
Wed 19th Oct, 2011 in Features
It wouldn’t be a Soundwave Festival without a few circle pits and a little aggression, but usually we’d expect to see most of the chaos in the front rows as the punters get whipped into a frenzy by another blistering riff and crushing drum roll. This year’s Soundwave is a little different.
The 2012 line-up brings together some of the biggest and loudest acts on the planet and with big bands come big egos. With System of a Down, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson and more on the bill we knew we were in for a bruising year and already we’ve seen one act dropped from the festival after a clash of wills. With a line-up as big and outspoken we’re expecting that there’ll be almost as much action backstage as there is onstage.
The biggest clashes of Soundwave 2012:
Courtney Love Vs Soundwave
Soundwave boss AJ Maddah announced that Hole had been dropped from the lineup for the Soundwave 2012 tour by telling his Twitter followers that he was “really mad about this” as he was “given so many assurances that this would not happen when I took the booking [and] only put her on after a campaign of harassment!”
He went on to say that “when 2 bigger acts refused to play on the same bill as Courtney I stood by her booking & refused to kick her off… why would I fuck over another act to appease this unreasonable contract breaking harpie?” However he ultimately says that he’s “relieved we got the moody old cow off the bill. [There’s] no point talking her back, only for her to cancel later, or turn up & act like a rotten twat to other artists, fans, etc… if I had to keep tabs on all the people [Courtney Love] feuds with, I wouldn’t have time to do anything else”
Courtney Love responded by dismissing Maddah’s comments as “total and complete sexist claptrap”; calling him “a fucking disrespectful piece of shit” and a “sexist pig”; and asking “what bloody flight of crazed fancy made you think we’d open for Limp dude? no offence that’s nuts.”
Courtney Love Vs Fred Durst
Why was it “nuts” to expect Courtney Love to play before Limp Bizkit? Well, in May last year at a concert in Dallas she launched into a rant blaming the Limp Bizkit star for “the worst years in rock history.”
The rant was provoked by the sight of a punter in the crowd wearing Durst’s trademarked backwards baseball cap with Love rambling that “I have to say, as much as I like Fred, he brought about the worst years in rock history. That just be a fact, OK? That just be a fact. ‘I did it for the nookie!’ I did not do it for the nookie, I did it for the rock! I’m just saying, man, he’s a nice guy, but Jesus!”
“I see a guy with a backwards baseball cap. Dude, you! You scare me! You make me feel like you’re going to rape me or something, and all my children! You did it for the nookie, dude in the red baseball hat! Do you know one word to one [Hole] song? That is so lame. I’m so sorry; you’re here for the nookie! I could beat your ass.”
Slipknot Vs Courtney Love
This ‘feud’ has actually stared as part of the fall out over the Courtney Love Vs Limp Bizkit and Soundwave feuds. Are you keeping up with all of Courtney’s enemies?
When asked by the news wire service APP about Hole refusing to play at Soundwave Slipknot singer Corey Taylor had a few sage words of advice for the band’s outspoken frontwoman: “It’s like Courtney you haven’t released a big album in how long? Get over yourself and stop wading around in your own drama. You’ve got to take steps to get back to where you want to be, you don’t just come right back in and you’re on top. That’s a gutless way of looking at things and it’s unfair to Limp Bizkit. Shut up and play.”
Courtney Love Vs Marilyn Manson
Courtney Love also feuded with Marilyn Manson when they toured together back in 1999. Manson reportedly told the San Francisco Examiner: “I asked myself what is the last band in the world I would ever, ever want to tour with, and it was Hole, beyond a doubt. But then I thought, I love a challenge, I like to surround myself with aggravation, it helps me perform better. And I thought, well, here’s a chance to show Courtney the difference between being a celebrity and being a real rock star. We’re just going to blow her off the stage—my show will be the biggest and greatest rock show of the ‘90s.”
Hole was the opening act on the Beautiful Monsters tour which collapsed just two weeks into its planned two-month run when Love’s management abandoned the tour citing “production problems” as Hole ending up having to pay for too much of Manson’s high budget production. According to a review of the tour’s stop in Vancouver, Love shrieked at the punters “Stop screaming for Marilyn Manson. I bet you all have tiny dicks!” and ran on stage during Manson’s set to start beating him after he told the crowd that “Courtney Love was backstage playing with her stinky pussy.”
