Black Dice's Playlist
Tue 4th Oct, 2011 in Features
Experimental Brooklyn three-piece Black Dice will be in Australia next week to bend minds with their tunes at the Melbourne Festival.
Before jumping on a plane the band took some time out to talk about the records that have changed their lives.
FIRST ALBUM YOU BOUGHT
I think it mighta been ZZ Top Eliminator. I joined a tape subscription club and bought that tape with like a dozen others for a penny or something. I believe I also got A-ha Hunting High & Low, OMD Crush, and Jefferson Starship Knee Deep In The Hoopla, among others.
FIRST ALBUM HANDED DOWN TO YOU
When I was about 10, my dad gave me two cassettes, Led Zeppelin IV and Kraftwerk The Robots. Took me about six or seven years before I could get into the Led Zeppelin, but I listened the hell outta that Kraftwerk tape. I used to love jamming it on the way to go skiing with my dad. Kraftwerk in the car in the snow at night, there is nothing better.
FIRST BREAK-UP ALBUM
Decendents Milo Goes To College. I’d been rocking this album in my walkman for a couple years already, but after the highschool breakup, I was able to fully grasp the angst fueling these tunes and really appreciate the blood & guts hangin off these ragged tunes.
GUILTY PLEASURE ALBUM
Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak, or pretty much any Kanye West. The man just lets it all hang out, and has the sickest sounds backing up the cheesiest lyrics.
FAVOURITE AUSTRALIAN ALBUM
AC/DC Back In Black. Pretty unfuckwithable. Plus it’s so balls out to have Brian Johnson come out so close after Bon Scott passed on. Highway to Hell is great too, of course.
ALBUM YOU WISH YOU MADE
I don’t really think about other people’s records that way. I like the way the new Gang Gang Dance record sounds, but nothing I’d make would probably ever sound like that, and I think that’s why I dig it- coz it sounds like nothing I’d ever imagine.
ALBUM YOU ONCE LOVED
Misfits Walk Among Us. I probably listened to this bad boy a million times. Still sounds great today!
LAST ALBUM YOU BOUGHT
The Gories House Rockin. Missed out on these guys 1st time around and Eric and Bjorn have been raving about this record so I just bought it about a week ago. Raw and classic!
YOUR ALBUM – REPO
This is Black Dice circa 2009, perfect snapshot of what we were into at that time and some of our most rocking jams. Not really playing these songs much these days since we have a new set comprised of newer material, but I stand by this record as some of our finest work.
THE ONE SONG THAT BEST DEFINES REPO
Glazin- this is our attempt at like a radio single, as I see it. Has sorta a verse/chorus type structure with a little alien sax solo type deal in the bridge. Kinda accessible for us!
Black Dice play with Lucky Dragons on Saturday 8th October at The Forum as part of the Melbourne Festival. For the full program head here.
