Calling All Cars Playlist

Melbourne trio Calling All Cars are about to hit the road for a huge national tour to show off tunes from their forthcoming album Dancing With A Dead Man. Before they head out we asked the band to talk about some of the album’s that have soundtracked their lives.

FIRST ALBUM YOU BOUGHT

Salt ‘n’ PepaVery Necessary. I think the only reason I bought it is because they had a song called Let’s Talk About Sex I didn’t know what sex was, but something in the back of my mind told me I needed to know. Unfortunately the album gave me no guidance, leaving me more confused than ever. I’m still on the hunt for something that will solve the mystery.

FIRST ALBUM HANDED DOWN TO YOU

My parents record collection was frightful at best so I looked to my older brother for some inspiration. I think the first record he handed to me was Inutero by Nirvana! I was really young at the time and all I remember thinking was ‘this is so loud and angry’ I guess it’s still loud and angry today, although it just makes more sense to me now.

FIRST BREAK-UP ALBUM

Sunset Studies by Augie March. I really embraced that record just after I’d broken up with my girlfriend at the time. It’s got an eerie subtleness to it that just seems perfect when you’re feeling a l melancholy. The song ‘Asleep In Perfection’ Still gets me everytime.

GUILTY PLEASURE ALBUM

I just looked through my entire record collection and I’m happy to say I no longer have anything cringe worthy. Having said that, I think I was once in possession of a Taking Back Sunday album. It was a shameful period of my life. Something I’d rather not think about.

FAVOURITE AUSSIE ALBUM

Tough question!! Unit by Regurgitator would have to be right up there. I remember being really young and getting that album not long after it came out. I played the shit out of it for a long time. I think its fair to say the nearly every song on the record could’ve easily been a single. Expect for the song I Will Lick Your Arsehhole that would never be a single for the obvious reasons.

ALBUM YOU WISH YOU MADE

Song For The Deaf by Queens Of The Stone Age. This album would definitely be in my top five. I’m a bit of a qotsa fan boy so I might be a little biased but I don’t think there’s a shit song on that album. Also, from a production point of view, it sounds like no other album. Everything is recorded so dry and tight giving the whole record this really interesting, claustrophobic feel. I don’t think Queens have ever made a bad record, but this one in particular is the one I wish I’d made.

ALBUM YOU ONCE LOVED

When I was in high school I really loved Jebediah’s album Of Someday Shambles. I think it was one of the albums that really helped me get through those awkward teenage years. I know Slightly Odway was their big hit but I honestly believe Of Someday Shambles is a better album. To me the song writing was more interesting, without becoming to “adult”.I still rate the record now, I just don’t have my copy anymore. Maybe I should hunt one down.

LAST ALBUM YOU BOUGHT

Last Album I bought was Arctic Monkeys new one Suck It And See. I’ve altogether stopped by cd’s so vinyl is the way I have been going for the past couple of years. With the AUD being so good right now, it’s such a steal buying records from the US. I’ve been a big Arctic Monkeys fan for a while and the new record is killer. In my opinion, I think Alex Turner is one of the best lyricist in the last 20 years.

YOUR ALBUM – DANCING WITH A DEAD MAN

Dancing With A Dead Man is a record we’ve put a lot of ourselves into. We spent a lot of time writing it and getting all the songs in to a space where we are really excited for people to hear them. Right from the start we set out to make an album that we’d be all really happy with and So far there hasn’t been one thing we’d change about it. It’s early days though…Maybe ask us again after we’ve being touring it for a year.

THE ONE SONG THAT BEST DEFINES DANCING WITH A DEAD MAN

I think it would have to be the title track, which was written fairly early on in the piece. At the time it was a fair departure from anything on our first album, but I think that really got us into a frame of mind where we could afford to be a little more experimental and take some risks. I’m really glad that happened as it’s definitely made for a more interesting album.
