Choose Your Own Adventure
Thu 30th Jun, 2011 in Features
The annual FBi Radio fundraiser ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ at the Factory this weekend features a stellar lineup of Sydney’s best acts including Faker, Parades, Matt Corby, Collarbones and Kirin J Callinan.
We caught up with three of the acts that are sure to provide plenty of highlights on the day – Deep Sea Arcade, Wim and Andy Bull – to find out about some of their own adventures and hopefully help to entice you down to the all-ages event on Saturday 2nd July. Remember it’s just $17 for FBi supporters and $20 non-supporters – a bargain!
Deep Sea Arcade
What has been your greatest adventure?
We just got back from a tour/adventure of the UK and Europe. We even adventured to Primavera Sound in Barcelona where we slayed an ogre.
What’s your most adventerous song?
We’re recording a highly adventurous song today. It’s called The Girls Won’t Let You Down. It’s about how if you’re on an adventure, or maybe a dream-quest, and a female elf swears to protect you and let’s you ride her giant snail through The Valley Of The Goblin-Trolls, you know she’s absolutely for real.
Wim
What has been your greatest adventure?
Being so called “discovered” at a night at Oxford Art Factory (fittingly named “Adventure Club”) by an American music juggernaut, landing in his studio like a pack of headless chickens, recording an album, and then under a full blown meteor shower, proceeding to climb a mountain and from just above where the “HOLLYWOOD” sign is posted, sing out to the nights sky. Dizzying Band Disney Adventure
What’s your most adventurous song?
All of our songs take me to very different places, far off lands and worlds (I have quite a visual response to music) but I would say that my favorite adventure is when we play the song Colossus – I imagine flying up to the sun and sky diving down back to earth.
Andy Bull
What has been your greatest adventure?
It feels like it’s premature to name one single event or chain of events. I suppose that the greatest adventure of anybody would be the construction of their own life’s meta-narrative, the kind of greater understanding of things. An internal journey in perception is “greater”, because it continues so long as we are alive- whereas our other little adventures (like relationships or career) are seasonal.
What’s your most adventurous song?
Hard to say. Sometimes I’ve thought “I’m being adventurous”, buts it’s adventurous only in comparison to what I have done previously, not by some universal standard. John Cage once recorded an entire track of silence. That’s adventurous the first time, but had he done it again and again, you might just call it “lazy”, for instance. I wrote half of The Phantom Pains on guitar- which was adventurous for me as a piano player. It’s all context. Having said that, I would like to be more adventurous in the future!
