Crash the Curb

FasterLouder spends five with drummer/vocalist Grace Smith.
Crash the Curb is everywhere right now, tell us how it all began.
We started jamming in Adam’s garage as a bit of fun, Adam was looking for someone to play keyboards in a few songs he had written and I had played a bit of piano before. Eventually I somehow ended up on the drums and he taught me some beats to go with his songs. We started out pretty much instrumental because neither of us were game to use the mic. Eventually I forced Adam to give it a try and that’s how the band came to be what it is. We brought out an EP a few months after we played our first gig. From there we won a Triple J Unearthed spot at the One Movement Festival last September, where we played our seventh gig. From there we have just played lots of gigs and written lots of songs.
Describe your style.
We are a garage punk band but we also have elements of indie rock and pop. The music is pretty manic; we use lots of different effects and have lots of changes in the music. People have said that we sound a bit like Melt Banana musically and Modest Mouse vocally.
What can we expect from one of your live shows?
We pretty much just play our songs and hope that people like them, nothing fancy. Adam’s pedal pressing and loops tends to confuse the shit out of people ‘cos there is only two of us but sometimes its sounds like a full band. It’s also quite loud so bring your earplugs.
Canberra’s music scene is…
Really impressive at the moment I can honestly say that some of my favorite bands are from here.
Crash the Curb’s plans for 2011?
Coming up we are playing at the Canberra Groovin the Moo which we are really excited about. We have also been working really hard getting a complete album together which will hopefully be done by the end of the year. Other than that we are just gigging as much as we can and having lots of fun.
