Bob Dylan covers tribute

We know the times have a changed somewhat since Robert Zimmerman changed his name and the course of modern music back in the early 60s but Bob Dylan is still here; still endlessly touring, confounding critics and appearing in the odd (very odd) lingerie commercial.

As part of the awe inspiring lineup of this year’s Bluesfest Dylan is heading to Australia in April and playing a few sideshows with some young up and comers in support – BB King in Adelaide and Paul Kelly in Sydney and Melbourne.

On the 24th of May he’ll celebrate his 70th birthday and every weekend newspaper supplement will go into tribute overdrive, but we figured we’d get in ahead of the pack and present some of our favourite Dylan oddities and covers as await the tour.

We start out with a recent cover of Thunder on the Mountain with Wanda Jackson and Jack White taking liberties with Dylan’s lyric “I was thinking about Alicia Keys /couldn’t help from crying… I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be” by substituting in “The Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis.

Speaking of Jack White, here’s a version of Dylan’s One More Cup of Coffee that he did with his old band.

Read on for more covers by Nick Cave, PJ Harvey and Dylan ‘rapping’ with Kurtis Blow
