Tell us about Los Capitanes
We’ve been kicking about the nation’s capital for almost 7 years now, drinking, smoking and sleeping our way to the bottom of Canberra’s rich social periphery. We’re pretty outspoken and are never afraid to speak our minds when we perform, which admittedly in recent years has caused us little bit of trouble. We never take ourselves too seriously though and always ensure that our gigs are forever scarred into the memories of those too horrified and/or drunk to take their own lives.
Describe your style
Like most ska bands, we fervently deny being a ska band. Mostly because there are so many incorrect assumptions and clichés that surround that title, but also because we really struggle with musical continuity. One reviewer recently described our latest album as ‘Frenzal Rhomb meets The Cat Empire’ which I guess is pretty accurate.
What do you love about Canberra’s music scene? How does Queanbeyan compare?
The thing we love about the Canberra music scene is the way that bands and punters have reacted to the dwindling availability of decent music venues. I think Canberrans have taken the house show to a whole new level, in fact I think its gotten to the point where most bands would much rather play at some random’s house for free than at an actual venue. I guess it’s kind of ironic given that all these ill-conceived residential zoning laws are the main reason for so many venue closures, as it just forces bands to take to the suburbs. We haven’t really played that many Queanbo gigs in the past, but from what I’ve heard Axis has been putting on some huge all ages shows with a lot of high profile hard-core bands, which is really awesome, considering the ridiculously overpriced Deane’s bus ticket to Woden or Civic.
What can we expect from LiquidFest this year?
The short answer is, a shit tonne of sick local punk bands and a creepy old ska act with more band members than it has dollars in the bank. The organizers are expecting 300 plus and the Facebook group is also kicking much arse, so it should be a pretty amazing event. Having a gig at a pool is an incredible idea, an idea that we definitely plan on stealing!
Los Capitanes’ plans for 2011?
We just released our second full-length album Rest For the Wicked through Sound System Records and we’re extremely proud of it. We’ll be touring all up and down the east coast and will hopefully even make it to Perth (according to Facebook, we have
twice as many fans there as we do in Canberra). There are also vague plans for a 2012 tour of Japan and Canada, but most of the band don’t even know about that yet so I’ll probably just leave it there before they read this and start whining about having to get time off work…
