Alice Through The WindshieldGlass

Australians are very good at helping out in times of need. Whether it be lending the military to a Western superpower for an overzealous invasion, helping a neighbouring country recover after a devastating tsunami or even just moving some furniture for a mate, Aussie’s are a giving bunch.

Queensland’s flood disaster is a perfect example of this spirit and there have been numerous organisations and appeals to help out those left with nothing. The RSPCA shelter at Fairfield in Queensland was one such tragedy. It was ravaged by flooding, forcing the animals to be shipped off to stay with staff and volunteers.

To help raise money for the struggling shelter, The Basement in Canberra is hosting the RSPCA Flood Recovery Appeal on Saturday night, featuring top Aussie metal bands Alice Through the Windshield Glass (ATTWG), Chud, Frostbite, Na Maza and Tortured.

Guitarist of headline act ATTWG Adrian Sahid feels strongly about the cause, as do the rest of the band. “We all love animals and the RSPCA is an organisation that needs no introduction,” he says. “They don’t receive anywhere near the support they need, so every little bit helps and this is our contribution.”

Taking their name from an educational driving video in a Simpsons episode, Sydney death metal hardcore outfit ATTWG are looking to make 2011 their busiest year yet. Sahid says it’ll be the year of Alice. “We want to stretch out to Adelaide and Perth, as well as release our album and tack onto some killer shows!”

Describing their sound as Californian tech-deathcore, Sahid says the band has been busy writing material for their upcoming debut album. After releasing EP Keep Your Eyes on the Road to much praise and adoration in 2009, fans will have to wait until later this year to get their hands on the new album. “We’ve spent most of last year writing material for it and still have some more to go,” says Sahid. “We hope our debut album Brutalis Australis will drop at the end of this year, maybe September (or) October.”

In the meantime, ATTWG will be finishing their tour alongside friends and label mates Elysian and Ignite The Ibex. “After the charity show in Canberra, we all head to Brisbane for a couple of shows on the 4th and 5th of February. (Then) we cap off our tour with Sydney Brutal Deathfest with some of the best brutal bands from the East Coast.”

Hoping to raise both money and awareness of the RSPCA’S plight, Sahid is optimistic about Canberra’s generosity. “We have no set amount that we hope to raise, we’re playing the show hoping that the people of Canberra think with their pockets and donate generously. Any sum will be fantastic, but let’s aim to get as much for the RSPCA as possible!”
