Bridezilla

This weekend, beguiling Sydney five-piece Bridezilla will headline the very sold-out Changing Lanes Festival in Sydney. The band has recently returned from a circuit of the UK, including a slot at Brighton’s indie love-in The Great Escape.

To get up to date with the world of Bridezilla, we threw some serious and not-so-serious questions in the direction of leading lady Holiday Sidewinder and violin virtuoso Daisy Tulley.

How was the UK tour?
Holiday: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Daisy: All in all, it was hot hot hot. Highlight: perving on all the hot boy bands at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. Just imagine 350-plus boy bands in one small town. Spicy spicy spicy.

Josh, how torturous is it being on the road with four women?
Holiday: I think there is probably a long and fascinating answer to that question.

Daisy: I’m Daisy, but I can imagine Josh’s answer would be: I love them like sisters and I love being on tour with them, even when their menstrual cycles are in sync and they are bitches.

Does a majority female band encounter many groupies?
Holiday: No. They tend to steer clear.

Daisy: We have our dry spots and exciting spots. Pia holds the trophy for most obsessive groupie, a guy called Kyle in the USA drove six hours to ask her on a date.

You have played with quite an impressive list of bands, who would you say has been the most inspiring?
Holiday: The Dirty Three and John Cale in Hobart, Tasmania for the Mona Foma Festival on The Wharf. I laughed, and cried, and cried, and laughed about it all again.

Daisy: The XX and the Black Lips. They really put the fire back inside.

It’s always nice when a band makes the effort to set-up a blog for us fans, who is the blogger in the group?
Holiday: We take turns to tell the tales. There’s a pretty noticeable change in tone between us.

Daisy: Ah, we have all pitched in a bit. Holiday usually uploads the photos ‘cause she has unlimited internet and I write the crass and embarrassing-for-the-other-band-members blogs. Bridezilla vs. Sex In The City is favourite blog so far.

We live in a time where the internet seems like the easiest way to get noticed, have you found it’s helped you to get to where to are now?
Holiday: I think it’s probably more of a word of mouth thing with us, but perhaps the easy listening access and all the information at your fingertips helps. Especially crossing state lines, oceans and seas…

Daisy: Yes, it’s how we met our manager Neil. He sent us an email on MySpace, then six months later he was holding our hands…

Would you say you owe much of your success to die-hard manager Neil Robertson?
Holiday: He’s probably contributed more to our lack of success than anything else.

Daisy: Weird question. Not answering it. Or if you really need an answer: no. Go suck a doggie’s dick Neil.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Changing Lanes?
Holiday: Having a dance to Jingle Jangle.

Daisy: I was looking forward to seeing Step Panther. They are my favourite Australian band, hands down. But I just heard they have been cut off the bill, which is upsetting. I’ll stick around for Cabins and Tame Impala and maybe have a dance to Dynamite Sound DJs. They are pretty cool and do cool trumpet miming.

Changing Lanes Festival takes over Eliza St, Newtown on Sunday 19 September. If you haven’t got a ticket, unfortunately you’re shit out of luck.
