House Vs Hurricane
Tue 8th Jun, 2010 in Features
House vs Hurricane is a rapidly up and coming post-hardcore band from Melbourne. The band was formed in 2006 and have just released a debut full length Perspectives, following their successful EP Forfeiture.
The band has toured with the likes of Bullet For My Valentine, The Amity Affliction, Parkway Drive, Behind Crimson Eyes and The Devil Wears Prada.
FasterLouder caught up with the band to chat about the album, tour and all things ‘House vs Hurricane’.
First up, you name is an interesting one, tell us where the name ‘House vs Hurricane’ came from?
A friend and I were going to start another band when HVH had a different name and we were going to call it House Vs Hurricane. Then that didn’t end up happening and we wanted change our name and I threw it into the mix and we all liked it so that’s where it came from!
How was Melbourne Soundwave? Any stories from the day?
Melbourne Soundwave was an incredible day, it was super hot but the show was so rad. We played in a big tin shed and got to hang out with some rad bands. We used our passes to go into the catering area backstage of the main stages and had some awesome food, I’m not sure we were meant to eat there but we did I got watch Nine Inch Nails sidestage, that was rad as well.
You’ve been busy touring in 2009 with a sold out Bullet for my Valentine tour, and your own tour which was also a sell out, and now announced a huge 19 show national tour beginning this month, do you feel touring and live shows are a big part of what makes a band successful?
Yeah, live shows are definitely a huge part of our band. We have always really enjoyed playing live and feel it is the strongest point of our band.
There are a lot of all ages gigs on the bill, why do you choose to play all ages shows, do you feel you have a big underage following?
All ages shows are the best, we love them, we do have a strong underage following so we like to make as many of our shows all ages as possible.
Seeing as you have toured so much of late; what has been your favourite venue to play?
Manning Bar in Sydney is a great venue, I think it is everyone in the band’s favourite venue.
Your debut full length album Perspectives was released in March, how do you feel about the finished product? Do you think fans of your EP Forfeiture will enjoy the album just as much?
Perspectives is a different record to Forfeiture, we feel it is a good progression and maturing in sound for our band and are super stoked with how it has come out!
The artwork for the cover of Perspectives is very interesting, could you tell us the story behind it.
I found the artist – Martine Johanna in a magazine and emailed her with an idea and we went back and forth with ideas until we came up with something we were all stoked on, and that is the cover of the album.
Who are your main influences as a band?
We all listen to a lot of different music so it all comes into influencing our sound and style.
How do you all know each other, and how was House vs Hurricane formed?
House Vs Hurricane was formed when we changed our name in late 07’, the core four of us knew each other from local shows and Chris Dicker and I did a music course at school together, we were all into a similar style of music and wanted to do something different so we started the band!
Finally, can you describe your music in one simple word.
One word… ‘KEYSMOSH2010’.
House Vs Hurricane play at Come Together in Sydney on Saturday 12th June.
