The ladies from WA Roller Derby have teamed up with some local musicians to release a kick- ass compilation CD and help raise some money to get their sport off the ground. Evilspazz chats to Ariadne Fox (aka K.O. Kitty) -one of the organisers of the CD and gig, to see what it’s really all about.
For those who aren’t aware, what is Roller Derby?
“Roller derby is a punk rock, feministic sport, all about getting hot, sweaty and bruised on eight wheels. It initially started in the 60s I think, but has had a recent resurgence in the noughties. It’s empowering, rough and tough, but the friends you make in it are friends for life.”
So you need to be pretty tough to play?
(Laughs) “Totally!! Princesses need not apply! We get some pretty bad injuries.”
How did you first get involved with derby?
“I first came across derby on TV in 2008 then joined Perth roller derby soon after. When I moved to America I had to quit Perth, but started a team there. Finally I came back here and joined WARD!”
Ward?
“WARD is WA Roller Derby, we have four teams at the moment, Fremantle Derby Dames, The Central Swarm, The Jolly Rogettes and the Bunno Boilers. The two leagues are WA Roller Derby and Perth Roller Derby.”
Tell me a little about why you decided to do a compilation CD?
“The compilation CD was a drunk decision made after the derby Christmas party! I think derby and music go together really well, I mean hot guys and gals on stage, hot gals on skates, does it get any better? It’s a very punk sport, plus most of the girls are music lovers, musos or groupies like me.
To the best of our knowledge this is actually the first derby CD released, so sometimes drunken ideas really do come through!”
The CD is a fund-raiser too? What are the funds for?
“The funds will go toward buying new gear for the girls, as well as a special portable rink that we can take anywhere for bouts.”
How did you go about choosing the bands on the CD?
“We basically made up a short list of all the local bands we liked and sent them emails! Some of them were friends, some we just contacted out of the blue. As word started getting around the bands actually started approaching us.”
And how about the fund-raiser show, How did you go about choosing those bands?
Those bands were purely we love them so we must have them! We are still incredibly awestruck that Project Mayhem wanted to play for us!”
What can people expect from the show?
“What can you expect… Hmm well loads of beautiful punk n alt sounds, beautiful burlesque babes and sex on legs derby girls! All the best things for am awesome night!”
Who are you looking forward to seeing on the night?
“I’m personally a massive fan of AAAGH BATS! Their sounds totally get me jizzed up (Laughs)”
