Talking to Kieran Ryan these days is a hard thing to do. As one half of Melbourne’s new favourite, Kid Sam, things are getting busier by the minute.
He and fellow band mate and cousin Kishore are about to embark on another nationwide tour (“but our first as headliners” Kieran proudly quips) and get the songs of their recently released debut album out on the road.
“Yeah it’s been pretty hectic lately, but it’s been really good. The last six months in particular have just been huge for us. We’ve been doing it for a few years but up until last year we’d never even played outside of Melbourne. It was only after we made the album that our stuff got picked up and started to get played on the radio and we started doing tours around the place. All we’d planned for was to have a really fun album launch, which we did, and everything else that’s happened has just kind of kept exceeding our expectations”.
The release of their self titled debut suddenly found a lot of attention and praise being sent their way, and tracks like Landslide, Down To The Cemetery and We’re Mostly Made of Water were instant hits for the radio.
Before heading into the studio, Kieran spent the better part of the year working his way around Australia, and getting a feel of places he’s likely to start to know a lot better if the tours continue. “I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the places I’ve been again, for sure. And going back to play music is something I’m excited about”.
But while Kieran traversed the country Kishore worked on other projects (Seagull, Where Were You at Lunch) and it wasn’t until Kieran’s return that Kid Sam really started to exist. “As kids we didn’t really see each other that much, we lived nine hours apart and only saw each other once or twice a year. We only had a couple of jams together but I was living in Melbourne and doing music things and when he moved down I just asked him to work with me and here we are”.
“We were just playing a lot of little gigs and eventually we decided we should do an album, even if it was just for ourselves,” Kieran admits. “We were making it with all of our own money, and really just to make it and have it as something we’d done. It took ages to finally get it released, which was okay with us because we didn’t really want to look at it. You become so involved with making an album and there’s so much thought and work that goes into it that it becomes really difficult to remove yourself from that. I was happy for it to lie around for a while”.
Looking towards the end of life on the road, Kieran says that there’s definitely another album headed our way, but not just yet. “It’ll be a while before we do it all again, but we need some time to just do other things and just hang out, and just not be as busy for a while”.
