BDO LOCALS: 20th CenturyGraduates

The local Adelaide contingent is well represented and one band worthy of your attention is up and comers 20th Century Graduates. Jeremey from the band talks about the lead up to the Big Day Out and some previous experiences.

What’s the feeling amongst the band in the lead up to the Big Day Out? “We are obviously really excited, and are equally as panicky trying to make sure we’re ship-shape for the big day. It’d be safe to say that at one time or another, every band member has dreamt about playing the BDO, so to actually be doing it now is really special.”

With so many other bands doing their thing, how do you plan to win over punters on the day? “Since our pyrotechnics guy fell through, we’re hoping that because we’re on at around lunchtime, and we’re playing near food stalls, people will swing past and have a listen to what we do.”

What’s the best part of being a band playing the SA leg of the Big Day Out? “The fact that we’re playing big day out is undoubtedly the best part. Getting a free ticket to the big day out follows closely behind.”

What bands are on your ‘must see’ list? “The Decemberists, Decoder Ring (Sadly, our sets clash), Magic Dirt, Passion Pit, Devendra Banhart.”

How do you plan to unwind/celebrate after your set? “Beers, Bands and Beef Jerky.”

Do you have a good story or memory from a previous BDO experience? “Well, we could crap on about all the amazing bands we’ve seen but that wouldn’t be very interesting… One year however, a few BDO’s ago, just after the final bands had played and every exhausted patron was heading for the gates, one besotted reveler found it of the highest importance to scale the decommissioned ferris wheel, and swing off the top-most carriage – a pretty impressive feat really. It’s quite amazing what the human body can achieve after a solid day of drinking. Not long thereafter, much to the disappointment of a growing crowd, police intervention saw that the man got back to the ground in one piece.”

20th Century Graduates play the Hot Produce stage from 1-1.40pm.
