Before touring Europe, the Vegas Kings will play their all-time favourite Brisbane venue, the Troubadour, this Friday night.
The Vegas Kings have been around for just less than ten years and include: Ben, Pete and Angus. The trio released You’ll never work in this town again in September of last year, which is the reason for their looming overseas tour.
The boys believe this is their best record yet, Ben explains, “It’s heaps dirtier, I feel it captures the original intentions of the band, better than any of our previous ones. The new record has given us the urge to go back to Europe.”
Vegas Kings think touring overseas is just like a holiday “except of being treated like a tourist, you get to go straight to the coolest or shittiest bar in town.” Ben said his favourite overseas venue is “The Pits,” in Belgium because, “It’s very strange. Right next to where the girl takes the money for tickets is the urinal. So, there are people talking to the ticket girl and taking a piss at the same time, really funny for us but normal for them.”
Grounded and humble, they consider that their outlook and goals have not altered, which are, “To make new music and play gigs. I’m not sure I really want a – œcareer’ in music. I like that we can play gigs when we feel like it, tour when we want to and sell a few records here and there. In some ways, it would be a drag to have to rely on it to pay my bills. Having day jobs means you can do whatever you want playing music. You don’t have to pander to anybody.”
Ben has uncovered that he would rather play guitar than talk about music and his incentive for playing guitar was Back to the Future. “I watched that scene from The Enchantment under the Sea dance, over and over again, no shit.”
Additionally, Ben’s passion of music comes from music itself, “I like making up music. I think anyone and everyone can do it. I like how it doesn’t matter if (technically) you can’t sing or play an instrument. You can still participate in music.”
Vegas Kings play the Troubadour tonight in support of Lovers of Modern Art’s debut album launch.
