COOPERS ALIVE 2009: MereTheory
Mon 19th Oct, 2009 in Features
Mere Theory are set for a big summer and are very much so looking forward to showcasing their wares at the Coopers Alive SA Live Music Showcase at Fowler’s Live. Singer Chris Mellow delivers the latest.
What’s the latest goings for the band? “We’ve just finished recording our second album. We’ve been into the studio three times this year, working on different parts of the record. It’s taken us quite a while, but we’re really proud of the way everything turned out. I think spending the extra time has allowed us to create something quite different, but still Mere Theory. We’ve only played a couple of shows this year as we’ve focused on the recording, so we’re pretty keen to start playing live again.”
What does it mean for your band to be playing the Coopers Alive SA Live Music Showcase? “It’s a great honour. We love playing shows anyway, but to be able to do it with other great bands and with the help from Coopers is awesome. There are some excellent bands not only on our bill, but on the other shows as well.”
Do you approach this special event any differently to a normal gig? “In a way, yes. Often you just organise a show, promo it a bit and then play it. Thanks to Coopers and the organisers of the event, we were able to sit down and discuss some ways in which we could make the show unique and worthy of people’s support. The four bands were able to make some decisions as to how we would promote the show and hopefully get some punters along. We had an original piece of art created for the promo poster and there are a few other things we are planning for the night.”
Is there any extra pressure knowing that industry types might be sussing you out? “There is always pressure to play and perform well. Having industry types there makes no difference to me. I guess people within the industry would tend to analyse the show and our sound, but personally I would hope that most of the punters would be doing that anyway. I think the beauty in our music is that when you delve into it you start to discover new things, so personally I’m all for some analysis.”
What can punters expect from your set on the night? “Definitely some new songs, but there’ll be some oldies as well. We’re pretty keen to road test some of the new ones and see what people think.”
Any surprises? “Well, I think we’re getting a little old for surprises. On stage you can expect the usual bad dancing and these days we’re known for bass guitars being hurled dangerously across the stage. There will be some sweet lighting going on, a new set, which will be filmed by URTEXT Studios, some art for sale, drink specials and after show partying.”
What are the plans for the band for the remainder of the year? “Our first priority is to finalise the album and get the release sorted. We’re planning to tour a new single early next year. A festival spot would be cool as well. Any takers?”
