With a bustling portfolio of reviews and photo galleries, Mary Luckhurst (aka super-fantastich) has Canberra covered. FL quizzed the all-rounder about her exploits with the camera.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m actually a writer, believe it or not! Photography is just my – œhobby’ (as my mum refers to it). Correction: – œexpensive hobby’ (as my dad refers to it). I’ve been with FL since 2008, and that has definitely nurtured my longing to take photos of bands.
What drew you to the world of music photography?
Music led me in and I haven’t left since. The best feeling is capturing a musician doing something awesome whether it be a devilish, smug look or whatever. That’s why I keep shooting.
What is the best gig you’ve shot?
Too many to name! Definitely one to mention is my most recent: Oh Mercy supporting Lisa Mitchell at ANU BAR (23/09/09). I wasn’t even meant to be in the pit. The FL photographer of the night said, “What the hell are you doing in here?” I just really like the band.
What is the worst gig you’ve shot?
There hasn’t been a – œworst’ gig to shoot. Some times lighting is poor, sometimes the venue sucks, sometimes I can’t get the shot I’m after due to a certain three-song rule, sometimes photographs just turn out shit. So many factors! I just think it is all about the learning process.
Tip for aspiring photographers?
Prepare yourself to recieve some advice from photographers who are/or think they are better than you. If they’re getting all the gigs you want then maybe it won’t hurt to listen. A personal tip from me is to practice, start shooting small gigs then work your way up the ladder (either that or start sending money or gifts to your editor)!
