Journeying from worlds away, Monkey Puzzle Tree will intrigue and charm. Electric violin, guitar, piano and drums unify to produce a diverse blend of sounds. Hints of classical, Latin, jazz and gypsy are glimpsed through a soundscape that is romantic and inherently beautiful. Check them out at the Bosco Theatre while you can… Matthew Gorgula provides more info.
What is Monkey Puzzle Tree about? “We’re an instrumental quartet featuring electric violin, acoustic guitar, piano and drums. It’s about collaborating musically.”
How did you get the name? “It’s the name of a Chilean tree,” Matthew pointed out. “It has nothing to do with the hanging monkey toy (“Barrel Of Monkeys”), but we’re somewhat playful in our approach. It’s a pine tree with twisted, spikey branches. It’s amazing to look at and somehow reflects our sound.”
How would describe the music of the Monkey Puzzle Tree? “Contemporary Classical, Experimental Flamenco, Post-Romantic Movement and Post-soundscape for Film.”
Are you looking forward playing shows throughout the Festival Fringe? “We’re playing shows at the moment in the Garden Of Unearthly Delights and for Fuse Festival. It’s been wonderful. We’re receiving a great response from new audiences too. We’ve had a full house at Bosco Theatre so there’s no need at all for any complaints. Thanks so much to all those for the support and who came along to check us out.”
What would you say to entice punters to checkout your show? “Come along with an open mind, ready to check out something you never expected came out of Adelaide.”
What can punters expect from your show? “Expect… anything but rock ballads. Although we may just be the next Rock Ballad Orchestra.”
What makes a good show for you? “The sound… The right atmosphere, so when we can feel the audience got what we’re putting out. That’s what gives us the buzz of playing this music.”
What has been you most embarrassing moment on stage? “Most embarrassing moment was our first ever public show. We played in pitch black at what ended up being a hippy rave party rather than an acoustic experimental evening.”
What’s the plan post-Fringe for Monkey Puzzle Tree? “More music, more songs. Tour the world. Music for film and theatre even, looking at writing some soundtracks. Oh yeah, and our debut CD will be out mid year (thanks to kind support from the excellent people at Helpmann Academy!) So keep your eyes and ears above ground for this one.”
