As satisfied as he is with his previous album Suburban Songbook, Kevin Mitchell is adamant that his future release Goodnight, Bull Creek will be more rocking and less modest. “I didn’t want to be another fuckin’ guy with an acoustic guitar singing his lungs out. I just felt like there was so much of that going on. I started to become really paranoid; every time I saw a guy up on stage with an acoustic guitar I’d think, ‘Fuck here’s another one!’”
Paranoia aside, Mitchell elaborates on what his third release under his pseudonym Bob Evans will sound like. “I’m swinging the electric guitar again, and all the songs were recorded live. It’s got a real feel of electricity running through it. It’s probably not as gentle and as humble as the last two records.”
Goodnight, Bull Creek has seen Mitchell reunite with producer Brad Jones in Nashville, Tennessee. Jones is the first producer that Mitchell has collaborated with twice, as every Jebediah album has been produced by a different person in a different location each time. Mitchell tells of another reason why he returned to Jones. “He’s just a good lookin man, you know?” he chuckles. “I’m such a sucker for a good looking man. I got to spend a month with him. Who could say no to that?”
Making the journey to Nashville was a pleasant experience, but it wasn’t without its dramas. On his website, Mitchell tells the story of being interrogated by two separate policemen on the one day. “I think I give off this vibe, I must look suspicious. Sometimes when I’m in shops and stuff I get nervous looks from people. I must look like I’m about to steal something. I don’t know what I’ve done, I don’t know what I’m doin’ wrong!”
When asked what his greatest achievement has been, Mitchell jokes around, initially stating that winning the best contemporary artist at the ARIAs was one of the best moments of his life. After a short pause he declares, “Nah, I’m being sarcastic, sorry!”
Once this is cleared up, he gives his real answer. “I think probably the most rewarding thing is playing live and having people show up to your shows. When people fork out their hard-earned cash and they’ve decided that they wanna spend their entire Friday or Saturday night going to listen to you sing your songs.”
Having already created one alias, Mitchell doesn’t completely reject the notion of conjuring up another one. However, he’s not going to have any time soon – with new albums on the horizon for both Bob Evans and his long-time band Jebediah. What is certain however is that he would not feel at ease releasing something under his own birth name. “I don’t think ill ever make a record as Kevin Mitchell. It’s such a dorky name. When I think of Kevin I just think of like, a nerd.”
Fans will have to wait until April/May 2009 to hear a new album from Bob Evans, but in the meantime you can find the man touring around the nation throughout November.
