The Battery Kids exploded onto the Adelaide music scene in 2005. The four members met while studying music and recorded a three-track demo. The CD saw them gig all around town, supporting such acts as The Vasco Era, Whiskey Go Go’s, The Inches, Special Patrol and many more. Pianist Bowl Lipson suggests that music lovers should get down there to check this show out.

What’s the latest for the band? “Lately we’ve received an Arts SA government recording grant,” Bowl mentioned. “So we’ve demo’d about twenty songs that we plan to narrow down to ten for our debut album. I can’t wait to have it out there!”

Are you looking forward to supporting The Rocketsmiths? “Nah, I hate playing music,” Bowl said. “Just joking, cant wait. It’s always so much fun playing at The Gov. It’s got the best vibe and we always seem to play really well there. I’ve heard the Rocketsmiths’ music and its really cool, but I’m yet to see them live, so looking forward to that.”

What can punters expect from your band? “You can bet any amount of money that Tom (our bass player) will be loose his shit! He moves around like a primal animal on stage. We’ve changed our songs around a lot lately. A lot more dirty organ sounds, distortion and grittyness. So anyone who’s seen us before can expect us to sound totally different (some would say better).”

Do you think there is more pressure for a support act? “There’s more pressure on the headline, it’s their show, they have to pull the most people and upstage the supports. Support slots are usually pretty cushy. Not that we don’t try to pull a crowd and upstage the other bands when we support.”

To punters who don’t know how would you describe your sound to them? “Dirty organs, crunchy guitars, three part harmonies and catchy melodies. A rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack to a Tim Burton movie.”

What do you think makes the Adelaide music scene so great? “For a ‘small’ town there are so many talented bands,” Bowl thought. “It includes the ones we’re playing with at The Gov. There’s just a plethora of awesome music out there. Plus you make great friends with the other bands, half of my friends I know because I’ve played shows with them. I can go to the Exeter any night of the week and some drunk Adelaidian band member will be there to hang out with.

What do you see as the next big challenge for The Battery Kids? “Other than finishing our album, I’d say breaking into the interstate music scene. If we wanna get anywhere as a band we have to crack Melbourne and Sydney. We’ve travelled over a couple of times but after this album is finished we’ll be there all the time trying to pop that cherry. So come see us when travel to your town!”
