One act worth checking out at the Coopers Alive SA Live Music Showcase is starlet Cookie Baker who will be unveiling so new tunes off her forthcoming album..
What’s the latest goings on for Cookie Baker? “I’ve been knuckling down for the last few recording sessions for my album. Yes, finally! Quite a bit of interstate travel, getting up to a lot of mischief in Radelaide and constantly dreaming up new and wondrous ideas for my next concept show. I like to keep things fresh!”
What does it mean for your band to be playing the SA Live Music Showcase? “Well, I love Coopers ales, does that count??”
Do you approach this special event any differently to a normal gig? “For me,” Cookie questioned. “It’s more about the event as a whole, rather than just my involvement in it. There is a spectacular bunch of bands involved and everyone seems pretty psyched to make it a fab weekend. There’s a lot of diversity within Adelaide’s live music scene in regards to the interest in different genres from each of the acts. No one wants to miss anyone else’s show and that will be hard, considering the crossovers of timeslots during the weekend.”
Is there any extra pressure knowing that industry types might be sussing you out? “No, not at all. At the end of the day, if any given person likes my stuff or not, that’s cool with me. We all have different palates and tastes in music and I believe some artists should be a little more chilled with that and not so precious about it. Just suck it up, have fun and make music you want to hear.”
What can punters expect from your set on the night? “Faux-folk pop cabaret for the contemplative wino. A whole lotta love and little bit o’ lust in a musical format. Ye-ow!”
Any surprises? “They wouldn’t be surprises if I told you now!”
What are the plans for the band for the remainder of the year? “I’ll be releasing my debut album in spring and then embarking on a triple-bill tour with a couple of interstate bands who have also recently released new recordings. Then I’ll probably cark it over summer, before revving up for my next Fringe show. I’m touring quite a bit next year and I have a theatre show in the works for the end of 2009.”
Cookie Baker plays The Wheatsheaf Hotel on Saturday 26 July from 8pm as part of the Coopers Alive SA Live Music Showcase.
