Meet the Garage to V statefinalists - John Steel Singers

The John Steel Singers have their sights set on securing the G2 v crown. Do they have what it takes to make it all the way to V Fest? FL gets some answers on the who what why and how of JSS.

Answers by Pete of JSS.

Was music always an important part of your life?
Yeah totally, if you add up the total years spent playing a musical instrument of all the members of the band it equals…... well I’m not sure what it equals but its alot, especially if you count individual instruments.

What’s your earliest musical memory?
Being really confused as to why some country singer wrote a song about a monkey entering bull riding competitions. My father has a lot of crap country records to his name.

How would you describe your band’s music?
That question is really best answered thru the medium of interpretative dance which wont work for me this time….. ahhh I’d say retro influenced melodic pop. And that doesn’t really explain much at all. I guess you could say we are somewhat pleasing to the ear.

What are your musical influences?
Six members equal a lot of influences. Here’s a small list – 60s popular music, Bowie, The Go Betweens and the ringtone maker on my phone.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at the V Festival?
Smashing Pumkins and Air will be sweet.

If you win Garage to V what would you have in your rider?
A helper monkey with a vest that holds 6 beverages so we wont have to fight over who gets the first serve of beverages from the previously mentioned helper monkey. A can of chunky soup, lots of beers and a sippy cup.

What artist would you want to share a sneaky backstage pash with at the V fest? Umm probably one of the girls from CSS
Why? They look quite cute.

Who would you like to share a dressing room with and why?
One of the girls from CSS (see pash question…)

What’s the key ingredient for having at great day at V festival?
Don’t get hammered the night before, no matter how tempting it is, always wear sunscreen and I guess you should probably wear something ridiculous that shows off your chiselled abs.

How important are competitions like Garage to V in the ongoing success of your band?
They are giving bands a chance to play gigs that wouldn’t normally be available to them, its awesome! Competitions are awesome!

Don’t forget to RSVP HERE for the Brissie State finals at the Troubadour on March 6 with John Steel Singers, Wind&Brackets, Grand Atlantic, Mikowai and special guests I Heart Hiroshima.
