With the Garage to V finals almost upon us and a slot mainstage at V festival up for grabs – let’s meet the Victorian bandsvying for their place in the sun – first up – pop rock masters Aleks & the Ramps answer the hard qiestions.

Was music always an important part of your life?
Yes. Except for the following times: in the forest, at the beach, whilst sleeping, reading in the bath, sitting in the garden watching kittens, playing lawn bowls, staring up at the stars at night, and at deaf camp.

What’s your earliest musical memory?
When still a foetus developing in my mother’s womb, she pressed speaker up to her abdomen and played Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music all through out her third trimester.

How would you describe your band’s music?
Like the sound of Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music being filtered through a Mother’s body.

What are your musical influences?
Early Wings records, Belinda Carlisle’s Runaway Horses, Gene Pitney, Larry David, Chris Morris, Raymond Scott’s foray into electronic music, Roxette en Esnpañol and Special Agent Dale Cooper.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at the V Festival?
The road crew, whose professionalism, diligence and impeccable attention to detail is second to none.

If you win Garage to V what would you have in your rider?
Water, Hopi ear candles, kittens.

What artist would you want to share a sneaky backstage pash with at the V fest?
I am not familiar with any of the artists performing at this year’s V festival.

Why?
Because I’m too cool for school.

Who would you like to share a dressing room with and why?
My band mates, because the ritual of cleansing one’s ears with Indian wax candles is an intimate undertaking which we prefer to do only in the company of kittens.

What’s the key ingredient for having at great day at V festival?
Cinnamon

How important are competitions like Garage to V in the ongoing success of your band?
It might be the most high profile show we’ll ever do, but we don’t regard it as any more or less important to the success of our band than a pleasant stroll to my grandmother’s to have a cup of tea and critique NME.

Don’t forget to check out the G2V Melbourne final tomorrow night at the Toff with Aleks and the Ramps, little red, Armin Firmin and Tic Toc Tokyo
