Daniel Townes is back in Adelaide for the Fringe Festival after successful stints in South Africa, Germany, Singapore, the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the UK. Catch his show and all his vagueness at The Rhino Room.
Are you looking forward to the Festival Fringe? “Yeah the Fringe is great, a good vibe and nice people around.”
How hard is it to break in to comedy in Australia? “Not very,” Daniel thought. “There are open mic nights and clubs all over the shop you just gotta pick up the phone and put your name down somewhere.”
How did you get in to comedy “I picked up the phone and put my name down somewhere,” Daniel tried to remember. “Nah, a mate suggested I give it a go so I did and here I am. In text!”
Do you recall your first big break? “Big break?”
What has been the highlight of your career to date? “Doing Just for Laughs in Montreal in 07 and all the travelling I’ve done.”
What is your show about? “Adelaide is stop one in a long list of festivals so Ill be breaking in
a new show,” Daniel promoted. “If I get bored ill probably chuck in some stuff from last years Melbourne show about being deported from America, which happened during last Fringe so I didn’t get to do it during Adelaide. On the whole though it is going to be about getting a new hour up and happening for all the festivals so the deportee stuff would be limited. It’ll all revolve about how I like making things hard for myself.”
Does a comedian plot or plan to pick on someone in the first or second row? “No not at all that’s just a preconception people have,” Daniel believed. “Comics only go hard on someone if they start it. You can turn an audience against you quite quickly by being mean to someone who hasn’t done anything to deserve it.”
What would you have been doing if you didn’t get in to comedy? “To be honest I wouldn’t have a clue. Something easy and fun probably.”
What’s your best line for a heckler? “It depends on what they say,” Daniel suggested. “Hecklers always say different things so you can’t really have anything set to say back, you kinda gotta run with what they say and see where you end up. Hopefully it’s not in the car park afterwards playing fisty cuffs.”
