Honesty, truth and emotion – Brett Winterford (on Peregrine’s music)
Sydney’s very own pop- rockabilly quartet, Peregrine, will be setting stages on fire Australia-wide to promote their latest work, Stay Inside and Misbehave. While the band does remain modest and laid back, Peregrine’s reputation and respectability in the music scene is on the rise, gaining these four boys international fame.
Their single Everything’s Under Control , received 150,000 hits on YouTube after Berlin TV company ASDTV chose it for an “Office Lip Dub ”. These guys are red hot. Forget what you knew about Pop and Rockabilly, erase the picture of Panic at the Disco, Peregrine show the reality of true Australian rockabilly music.
This humble band’s beginnings date back quite a few years to Sydney’s very own Excelsior Bar in Glebe, where they had a residency, “ We played our songs to people we came to love, they’ve been with us for years” says Brett Winterford, the band’s lead singer.
Unconsciously grasping the theme, of travel and wanting to explore to almost all aspects of the band, Peregrine have come quite a long distance from their small gigs in Glebe. “ I don’t think it was on purpose but it was out of desire to travel… I mean I did travel on my own but, together as a band, this album serviced our desire to travel together”.
The album reflects an evolution of the band’s earlier work, their lyrics more mature and the album is one ravelled with emotion. Winterford explains “ Its hard to explain the sound… with drum bands it’s heavy drums, guitar bands are guitar songs but with our songs every song’s different, what’s dominant depends on our imagination.”
This sense of freedom and pure fire towards their true passion shines through in their powerful single, The Good Ship clearly a favourite amongst fans and for the band also a favourite one to tear out. Yet the band seemed more excited to talk about their Sydney support artists and friends, Paul Greene and Melanie Horsnell who will join them at The Factory on the 1st March. When asked what can fans and newcomers expect from a Peregrine show? Brett simply answered “Honesty, truth and emotion” depicting a sense of realism of what true music should be about. The tours locations are all intimate and small allowing the audience to engage with the band and truly feel the music.
The band’s name reveals their constant desire to travel and explore the lands. “ Peregrine means to wander and rove”. Peregrine will be roving your way on the following dates.
