If there is one band worthy of your attention at the Big Day Out it is the almighty The Beards. Nathaniel from the band has a mission to complete at this year’s Big Day Out as he explains
What’s the feeling amongst the band in the lead up to the BDO? “We’re all really excited about the gig,” Nathaniel stated. “We’ve got a great timeslot on our favourite stage (Lilyworld) and we’re looking forward to playing as many songs about beards as we can in our allocated timeslot.”
With so many other bands doing their thing, how do you play to win over punters on the day? “Well,” Nathaniel paused. “I’m pretty sure we’re the only band in the world who exclusively sing songs about beards so anyone wishing to break up the day with something completely different should definitely come check us out. We hope lots of beardless people come so that we can convince them all to grow a beard and stop living a lie. And of course, anyone with a beard of any kind is pretty much obliged to come see us so that they can be a part of celebrating the virtues of living with beards.”
What’s the best part of being a band playing the South Australian leg of the BDO? “We love South Australia,” Nathaniel proclaimed. “It’s our home and it’s the bearded capital of the world… well, maybe not the world – that’s probably Germany or somewhere. But South Australia would have to at least be the bearded capital of Australia.”
What bands are on your ‘must see’ list? “Not too many of them have beards which I must say is a little disappointing,” Nathaniel pointed out. “But I’m hoping to convince some of the other bands to grow beards. Obviously we’re looking forward to Rage Against The Machine, but also Paul Kelly – and Bjork.”
How do you plan to unwind/celebrate after your set? “Firstly, we’ll be rounding up the best bearded people there and congratulating them,” Nathaniel thought. “Hopefully, we can go have a beer with them and then maybe go and see some beardless bands play some stupid, beardless music.”
Do you have a good story or memory from a previous Big Day Out experience? “Two years ago at the end of the day,” Nathaniel introduced. “Some guy climbed all the way to the top of the Ferris wheel. The cops had to send in a helicopter! He was swinging from carriages and everything. But that’s the kind of behaviour you’d expect from a beardless wanker like him. I hate him.”
The Beards play Lilyworld round 3-ish.
