2007 was a solid year for the Johnwoodsband establishing them as a band to be reckoned with their live show. The Big Day Out 2008 in Adelaide will be a major celebration as John Woods himself explains.
What’s the feeling amongst the band in the lead up to the Big Day Out? “We’re really looking forward to it,” John said. “There’s a real buzz about this years festival. It’s a hot line up and we’re really proud to be a part of it.”
With so many other bands doing their thing, how do you play to win over punters on the day? “Yeah you’re definitely spoiled for choice at the Big Day Out that’s for sure,” John suggested.” “We’ve developed a pretty solid live reputation through 2007 in South Australia. This gig is really important to us so we’ll be pulling out something special that’s for sure.”
What’s the best part of being a band playing the SA leg of the Big Day Out? “Surprisingly, that’s a really tough question to answer,” John thought. “It’s obviously great exposure, the vibe will be huge, and I’m sure we’ll meet lots of cool crew. But I guess when I stop and think about it I’ve got to say the best thing will be the sense of achievement in just being there with the band. There are a lot of sacrifices to be made to chase a career as a musician, playing the Big Day Out will be one of those moments to stop and celebrate.”
What bands are on your ‘must see’ list? “The best band I’ve ever seen in my life is Rage Against the Machine at the 1997 Big Day Out,” John recalled. “Seriously if you haven’t seen them before, get ready! Other acts I’ll be catching will be Battles and definitely Leader Cheetah from Adelaide.”
How do you plan to unwind/celebrate after your set? “Well I’ll definitely be having celebratory ale or two but that’ll have to be it,” John anticipated. “We’ll be recording our next EP in the days surrounding the Big Day Out so I’ve got to preserve the voice and mind a little. It’s a busy period for the group that’s for sure. I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
Do you have a good story or memory from a previous Big Day Out experience? “Nothing will ever top Rage Against the Machine,” John believed. “After their set finished I just turned around and walked out. I remember walking across the parklands to the faint sounds of Nick Cave on the main stage. I was done, satisfied! Luckily this year me and the guys play well before Rage so any folks that have a similar reaction won’t miss out on our show.”
Catch the Johnwoodsband on the V Energy Local Produce Stage from 2.30pm to 3.10pm.
