Progressive rock bands in the vein of Soft White Machine only come along so often and when they do they are a giant leap from the rest. Hailing from Adelaide, Australia these four individuals combine their extraordinary ability with their extensive experience to create this well-oiled machine. Karl Roberts (Vocals and guitars) talks about the whole Big Day Out experience.
What’s the feeling amongst the band in the lead up to the Big Day Out? “We’re super pumped about it,” Karl said. “It’s one of those kinda small but important steps in the right direction for an upcoming band to make and something we’ve pretty much all wanted for as long as we’ve been in bands!”
With so many other bands doing their thing, how do you plan to win over punters on the day? “It’s tough I guess to stand out among so many bands. We’ll just have to do what we do best and make sure we do it better than usual…play some good fresh original rock and hope the punters will appreciate it. Or we could resort to nudity and/or fire breathing.”
What’s the best part of being a band playing the SA leg of the Big Day Out? “It’s the best gig of the year in SA full stop,” Karl declared. “Playing a show with the cream of the music industry…it just makes me all warm in the pants thinking about being a part of it.”
What bands are on your ‘must see’ list? “Arcade fire, Rage against the machine, Quiet Child, Karnivool, New Season Black, The John Woods Band, Gyroscope, Bjork are all on the list.”
How do you plan to unwind/celebrate after your set? “By drinking beer and watching bands.”
Do you have a good story or memory from a previous Big Day Out experience? “Seeing bands like Ministry years ago on the main stage at what used to be ear shattering volumes was awesome,” he recalled. “Also seeing my friends shoe go flying about 100 meters in the middle of a packed mosh pit, then seeing him clamber desperately to get it back, and actually succeeding still impresses me to this day.”
