After five years of pumping out disco jams at various clubs and events around Australia they get the nod to play the Adelaide Big Day Out. The essence of The Swiss has always been their live shows where the improvisation can take the music anywhere. The Swiss will be heading back to the studio in January to follow up on their debut recording and will be touring Europe, Asia and the USA throughout 2008. Luke Godson (keyboards) is looking forward to what lies ahead.

What’s the feeling amongst the band in the lead up to the BDO? “There is a general feeling of excitement and anticipation,” Luke believed. “Playing in the boiler room will look great on the resume, and will be great practice for the upcoming tours of Europe and US. It is always great to play on large sound systems.”

With so many other bands doing their thing, how do you play to win over punters on the day? “We are not really planning to “win over” the punters,” Luke asserted. “We are just going to get up there on stage and do our thing. It is all about jamming and having a good time, and through that, our vibe and energy will translate to the crowd.”

What’s the best part of being a band playing the SA leg of the Big Day Out? “Playing at the Big Day Out will give us a chance to jam out some new tunes,” Luke mentioned. “We’ll try a few different things live before we head into the studio in the following week to record another 12 inch release. It is also great to be part of a team of local bands representing the state on a big festival level.”

What bands are on your ‘must see’ list? “Bjork, LCD Soundsystem, Rage against the Machine, Pnau (mainly because Tony is playing drums for them).”

How do you plan to unwind/celebrate after your set? “Maybe some Jameson’s On Ice and hitting the cricket nets for an hour then back to enjoy the rest of the shows.”

Do you have a good story or memory from a previous BDO experience? “In 2006 Mylo pulled out of the Boiler room due to illness,” Luke started the story. “Our friend Donnie Sloan was contacted and asked to put something together. So on the night before the Big Day Out we put together a set of italo electro boogie under the name TBA as that is what showed on the program for our set time. When we turned up to the boiler room everyone was like – œwho the hell are you?’ Our response was – œWe are TBA!’ No-body new that TBA was a band, they thought it had never been announced. The stage manager hit the roof and told us there was no way we were playing, as he was not notified of us. After 10 minutes of chaos, it was all sorted and we went on to play a well-received show that completely changed the tune of the stage manager who originally gave us attitude. We also managed to sneak in bits of Phil Collins, Giorgio Moroder, ZZ-Top and Telex in an 80’s mega mix towards the end of the show. It could have quite possibly been the first Big Day Out show ever to feature covers in an italo style.”

Catch The Swiss in the Boiler Room from 11.00am to 11.50am.
