2008 will be the year that Adelaide outfit Lady Strangelove will break the shackles and explode on the national scene. I really rate this band and to use a cliché their future looks so bright they better wear shades. Their guitarist Josh is keen to talk all things Big Day Out.

What’s the feeling amongst the band in the lead up to the Big Day Out? “We’re so stoked to be playing,” Josh mentioned. “Everyone’s looking forward to it. I’m going to frame the poster that has our name on the same bill with Rage Against The Machine. We’ve always looked up to them, they’re a huge influence on what we do, so it’s crazy.”

With so many other bands doing their thing, how do you play to win over punters on the day? “The idea is to play every gig as if its your last,” Josh put forward. “To play as hard as you can every time. But we don’t play to win over punters, we play because we just love to play. If people dig us, then cool, and if they don’t, then cool. We just do our thing and have fun. You get lost in the music & forget about everything else.”

What’s the best part of being a band playing the SA leg of the Big Day Out? “Having so many mates in the crowd,” Josh thought. “Plus we can walk home afterwards. Although, it sucks that Dr Octagon (Kool Keith) is skip’n the Adelaide leg of the tour. He raps on The Prodigy’s Diesel Power and that’s one of my favourite songs.

What bands are on your ‘must see’ list? “Rage Against The Machine, Unkle (I’m a big fan of their Psyence Fiction album with DJ Shadow. There’s nothing better than seeing a full live band play electronic music) and Bjork.”

How do you plan to unwind/celebrate after your set? “I’m going to have a good one :),” Josh stated.

Do you have a good story or memory from a previous BDO experience? “I’ll never forget seeing Soulwax in the boiler room and Mars Volta on the green stage at Adelaide BDO in 2006,” Josh recalled. “Two of the best gigs I’ve ever seen, just hours apart, in the one magical day. Those shows were burned into our skulls. And then seeing those dudes in weird suits on the oval throw giant purple bolts of electricity at each other, right after the White Stripes finished. That was insane. I remember thinking ”... HOLY SHIT!! It looks like Mortal Kombat!!!”

Catch Lady Strangelove on the Green Stage from 11am to 11.45am.
