It’s safe to say Postcards for Abby are going places – they’ve just released their self titled debut EP and even more importantly they’ve managed to get invited to the place where musicians, soap stars and b-grade American celebrities all rub shoulders- the ARIAs.
Lead singer Alex Woodward tells me that the band was extremely excited to hear that they would be attending this year and have a plan that will allow them to make the most of this crucial networking opportunity, “Basically at the after parties we’re going to go round and anyone’s that passed out- we’re going to insert business cards into their underwear.”
Despite the ARIA’s invite many people may not be familiar with the band or their sound so I ask Alex to describe Postcards for Abby: “Energetic and atmospheric rock” is his immediate reply, “We’re doing a kind of rock that you don’t hear in very often with Australian bands”. And for those of us who haven’t managed to see them live yet, what can we expect when going to a Postcards for Abby gig? “Well, the most important thing to us is the live show, I think a lot of bands don’t put enough emphasis on performing, but for us as a band performing is definitely the most important thing. I know I’ve gone to shows and thought, ‘I should have just stayed home and listened to the cd”. You should treat every show equally; it doesn’t matter how many people we are playing to, we always give our all in the show”. So no bad Postcards for Abby gigs so far then? “Well actually back in our early days we only had about two or three original songs so during one gig the band actually just jammed for half an hour while I just stood there having no idea what to do. Lucky there was next to no one at that show!”
Postcards for Abby have come a long way since those less than successful early gigs, and gained a loyal fan base who are no doubt excited to hear their debut EP. Although a lot of the material for the EP was ready to go before heading into the studio, the actual recording process wasn’t entirely easy, “It’s always a tedious process and there’s a lot of stress on the first day, it takes hours to set up and then everyone wants everything first take, but it’s all worth it because we’re really happy with how it turned out”.
Songs from the EP like Second Time Lucky and After Dark seem to have fairly ambiguous meanings and Alex is happy to keep it that way, “A lot of people have come up to me about After Dark and told me what they think its about, and it’s always been a lot different from what I was thinking of when writing it, and while its all well and good of me to say what the song is about I really like the idea of music affecting each person in their own way.”
As well as headlining their own shows Postcards for Abby have already had a jam-packed touring schedule over the past 12 months having secured support slots with bands such as the Hot Lies and Avalon Drive, but is their one band in particular that they would love to tour with?
“Incubus we are all huge fans, and I would run around the streets naked to get to tour with them”. As Postcards for Abby have a multitude of tour dates coming up on the East coast, make sure you keep an eye out for Alex streaking through your town soon.
