From a competitive Sydney northside beaches music scene that has spawned the likes of INXS, Midnight Oil and Angus and Julia Stone, emerges a band who have crafted their own sound out of careful observation, extensive listening and conscientious learning. From The Beatles to the Mars Volta to Amy Winehouse – the array of influences has developed a group of musical mates who refuse to place boundaries on music and structure.
larissa & the wild grey’s sound is undeniably pop, but its unanticipated time changes and rhymeless lyrics take the listener on a road less travelled. Their songs evolve from the pen of vocalist/keyboardist Larissa McKay, while drummer Steve de Wilde and bassist Andy Gray add their own ingredients bringing the recipe to life. With a voice and style often compared to the likes of Sade, Keane, Fiona Apple and Missy Higgins, the band is growing in stature and admiration – most recently playing a sold-out show alongside Jeff Stanley at The Sydney Opera House.
Debut EP ‘Soldier’ represents a sample of what the trio offers. With each show they explore new musical landscapes, continuing to push the boundaries of convention – playing live is where they prove themselves.
With growing interest from producer Ash Maklad (Young Divas and Human Nature) and Sydney- based vocalist Mr. Percival, 2008 is looking to be a promising year for larissa & the wild grey.
