Crowds start staring at Tomás Ford before he even drops a beat.
He’s some kind of Iggy Pop-vampire-god-drag-queen thing. He’s skulking across the stage, covered from head to toe in black, makeup and sequins… but he’s nervous. Which is weird; ‘cos you read he was “a must see for anyone interested in the local scene” (Drum Media, Perth). That he “successsfully aims to jolt and stun the senses” (dB Magazine, Adelaide). But this isn’t like that. He’s meek. Cute really. Kind of pathetic. He’s working some middle point between gay house music, glitch techno and Roxy Music and it’s really good. It’s just not what you expected…
Then suddenly, he’s all over you. The music’s changed; suddenly it’s aggressive and funny and disorienting and uptempo. You can hear why the goth and punk kids get into him as much as the electro crowd. It’s still dance music, really fucking good dance music, but it’s making you feel like kicking arse and taking names in a way you haven’t since you first got into Beasts Of Bourbon and the Sex Pistols. He’s pogoing all over the venue, pulling jazz dance moves, launching himself onto unsuspecting crowd members, doing boy band karaoke, doling out shoulder massages, pashing some enthusiastic guy at the bar and generally pushing everybody’s buttons in a way that we wouldn’t put up with if he wasn’t so entertaining and it wasn’t so much fun.
It’s the kind of show that scars itself into your memory in the way a rock show is supposed to but just doesn’t anymore.
