The Flairz fire up in the USA!

Fremantle’s very young rockers, The Flairz , with an average age of 13, headed off to the USA last week to perform in LA and to participate in SXSW, the leading music conference and showcasing arena in Austin , Texas. They were the surprise success story of the festival, receiving press and critical acclaim across the board unrivalled by any other band, Australian or otherwise.

They ended up on CBS news and in all the major newspapers including photos in the NY times, Washington Post , Billboard , Austin Chronicle and LA weekly and many more. They were also featured as the lead SXSW story on Friday nights CBS News.

All this attention has culminated in a great deal of interest from USA labels and has secured them an offer to perform at one of the USA’s biggest music festivals, Milwaukee’s Summerfest.

Drummer, Scarlett Stevens met Mr.Bill Zidjian who heads up Sabian cymbals ironically, she had just got an endorsement back home before she left, and then the head of the legendary company sees her play and offers her a worldwide deal!

Here below are some links and words of what the USA media are saying about our most recent youngest export:

New York Times – “a trio of 12- and 13-year-olds playing feisty garage-rock.”

LA Weekly – http://laweekly.blogs.com/style_council/2006/03/the_kidz_are_al.html

The Washington Post review Of SXSW
J.Freedom Du Lac

".....Seconding the motion that the kids are alright, the Flairz also tore up Austin with an explosive set of ragged garage-rock songs about high school and such. But they’re getting ahead of themselves: The average age of the coed Australian trio is 12, which no doubt added to their appeal. Still, the Flairz were among my favorite accidental finds at SXSW. (As it turns out, I’m somewhat late to the party, as Stevie Van Zandt has been playing the Flairz’ "Rock and Roll Ain’t Evil" on his satellite radio show.)

Going into the confab, the majority of names on the SXSW schedule were unfamiliar to me. There’s an incredible urge to investigate many of those acts in the off chance that you might discover something great, a la the Flairz…......"

And to quote Billboard magazine this week,

BillBoard – The Beat – Indie essentials – Can’t miss acts to catch at South By South West
"OK, the EP came out more than a year ago in their native Australia, but it is new to us….The punk pop on this import is charmingly unsophisticated, but it is impossible to dismiss the spunk and burgeoning talent displayed on this four song EP…"
Melinda Newman, Billboard.

And The Austin Chronicle said “Watching you play is just damn fun. It’s hopeful, it’s spirited, it’s contagious, it’s why people come here to SXSW"........... Michael Bertin.

And www.donewaiting.com’s Atomic Ned said,

“This band would have been great if they were 22 or 25, the fact that they are all around 12 years old makes them even that more impressive. So impressive that Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla, the girls in Smoosh, and Sire Records head Seymour Stein were spotted in the audience.”

The Flairz arrive home this week and will pack up their gear and pull out their books to return to school.
They will continue to record their first album , a follow up to last years independently released EP Rock and Roll Ain’t Evil out now on Lefroy Records/ MGM

The Flairz are:
John Mariani – guitar and vocals
Scarlett Stevens – drums and vocals
Dion Mariani – guitar and vocals
