‘Melts in your mind, not in your hand’ [otherwise known as ‘Our corporate press release]
Quietly going about its business since 2003, The Dolly Rocker Movement has worked and evolved through various guises and moods. The Syd Barrett-influenced pysch-pop has at times traded moves with garage, surf, and wall of sound – a mixture aptly described as ‘melts in your mind, not in your hand’.
Solid followings amongst the harbour city’s psychedelic underground, garage rockers and indie kids have given this band’s live shows a unique energy. Say, Spectrum’s sold-out release of the Dollys’ Electric Sunshine – a sparkling night and debut album that would be bestowed Drum Media’s album of the week. And with Off the Hip’s continued backing, the sophomore effort, Purple Journey, has further spread the band’s mantra to places as diverse as Denmark, Texas, Italy (and Cronulla).
Constantly underpinning the DRM sound is the determination to produce work of authenticity and honesty. Recordings journeying from the dusty four-track have crept onto Triple J’s airwaves, while the solid live show, complemented by Dandy Lyon’s charismatic ‘shoe shuffling’ and a rhythm as ‘tough as nails’, continues to see The Dolly Rocker Movement growing its reputation. The release of album three should take that a step further by late 2008.
As the legendary Bomp Records founder Greg Shaw (RIP) asked upon hearing the DRM’s first cassette demo: “Why isn’t anyone in America making music this beautiful anymore?
