Described as the “masters of perfectly unconventional pop” ( Inpress. ), the acts The Boat People have supported in Australia give a further inkling of their sound.
These include The Shins (US), David Byrne (US), Midlake (US), Dogs Die in Hot Cars (UK) and Idlewild (UK) as well as fellow natives The Church, Missy Higgins and Evermore. However, obvious heroes Crowded House are still where comparisons are most readily drawn. Having two lead singers also evokes a Gomez-like arrangement in which whoever writes the song has to sing it . Other Comparisons include Split Enz, Wilco, John Lennon and The Dandy Warhols.
After a string of well-recieved EPs, The Boat People released their much-anticipated debut album “yesyesyesyesyes” to great critical acclaim. Seven songs gained high rotation on national youth radio station Triple J and latest single “Unsettle My Heart” was added to national commercial radio station Nova.
In a country known best for its AC and its DC, The Boat People are one of a small number of bands forging a New Australian sound and taking it to the world at large. The band has made inroads internationally with showcases (Musexpo, USA) and airplay (Sveriges Radio SRX in Sweden, Indie 103.3 USA). Recently they have had extensive airplay on Nic Harcourt’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” on KCRW and chosen as A KCRW top tune pick. Also the band won the CMJ grand prize in Jan 08 and Unsettle My Heart is being featured in CMJ Monthly March edition, and recently played at The Great Escape UK and London shows in May 2008.
The band is now putting the finishing touches on number two “Chandeliers” which is due for release in July 2008 in Australia and September in the US and UK which will be supported by touring in October/November 2008.
