Schadenfreude – BIOGRAPHY

Formed in Melbourne in 2005, Schadenfreude are a four piece post punk / indie band, brought together by a common admiration for bands such as The Church, Southern Death Cult, The Cure, and early INXS. Their line up consists of lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Kitty Miller, lead guitarist and vocalist Rob “Dorian” Gray, bassist Monk and drummer Thomas F Hendry.

Schadenfreude’s formation goes back to November ‘05, when Kitty and Dorian finally decided it was time to work together. Kitty was bassist for The Redresser and lead guitarist for The Devil Dolls while Dorian played bass for Madame Eurotrash. They had been admiring each others work (and dress sense) for a long time and decided to form a band after realising they had plenty of common musical territory and equally focused ambitions. When drummer Thomas stepped forward after a five year hiatus from his kit (his last band being the infamous Melbourne punk outfit The Clap), the boys realised a band had found them. Completion came with bassist Monk who turned up for a jam, and stayed for the long haul.

Schadenfreude’s sound draws on influences from 50’s rock and roll, 80’s post punk and batcave, right up to the current crop of indie and new wave bands (like The Departure, Neils Children and The Horrors.) Kitty Miller’s songwriting consists of elegantly simple melodic structures combined with irresistible killer indiepop/new wave hooks. Add to that some big guitars for the frenzy factor, and – for those who like to think while they’re feeling—Kitty writes well-crafted lyrics which reward the more careful listener with layers of deeper meaning.

Schadenfreude live have a tight and tangible magnetism which has already found rapport with Australian audiences, playing packed shows at all the main Melbourne band venues and are very quickly garnering a strong and loyal following. They’ve already accelerated from humble house parties to regular bookings at major venues, and have supported the likes of The Mercy Kills and Zombie Ghost Train, as well as taking part in all-ages gigs, such as those put on by FREEZA. From their ever popular “(She is) Vertigo” to slow moody numbers such as “Autumn Fire”, to the high energy “Top Shoes” Schadenfreude perform with an energetic and driven stage sympatico, and convey their emotionally charged tracks with conviction. Kitty Miller’s striking looks and energetic intensity on stage are well balanced by the sartorially cool yet compelling presence of Rob “Dorian” Gray. Rhythm ace Thomas F. Hendry keeps the percussion upbeat drawing on mod, indie dance and post punk patterns and Monk’s melodic basslines give the songs a depth and texture that John Taylor would be proud of.

Schadenfreude have had a strong first year with great gigs, regular air-play on Melbourne’s 3PBS FM, a well-received demo and a stint as featured artist on Triple J’s “Unearthed”. According to the band themselves however “…2006 was just a warm up… for 2007 we’re planning a big year…” With the east-coast supports for one or two international bands planning to grace Australia’s shores confirmed, their first official release on the cards and more, Schadenfreude seem determined to make good on this promise.
