Few bands today are as promising as Richard In Your Mind (RIYM).
In little over a year the Sydney-based psych-poppers have sprung onto the Australian scene, quickly gaining a loyal following among those who have witnessed their narcotic brilliance. RIYM were quickly discovered by Triple J and awarded the prestigious title of Triple J Unearthed Winner for NSW earning them a spot at 2007’s Big Day Out Festival. From these humble beginnings they moved on to conquer stages hearts and minds with their live show before partnering with Sydney independent label: Broken Stone Records in 2007 for a special limited edition 7” Vinyl release of their first single: The New Sun and subsequently the release of their debut full-length album THE FUTURE PREHISTORIC (BSR003)
Out Dec 1 on BSR/SHOCK, The Future Prehistoric is a bold and impressive musical statement, destined to be an essential chapter in an undoubtedly enduring and exciting career for this unique Australian band.
True musical originals, RIYM explore a wide and varied expanse of sonic possibilities within their strong songs. Receiving critical acclaim for their engaging live concerts which often feature exploding confetti canons, psychedelic light shows, gongs, and the unmistakable charisma of front-man Richard Cartwright, RIYM truly stand out in their recorded material. Courageous voyagers in the world of studio recording, the four members of RIYM utilize their skills as multi-instrumentalists, offering up a mouthwateringly delicious sound feast in their debut full-length effor ‘The Future Prehistoric’. Sitars, Harmoniums, Theremins, synthesizers, swirling delays, and wild forests of percussion exist side by side with the more familiar sounds of acoustic guitars, drums, bongos and Beatle-esque harmonies. Drawing inspiration from other likeminded musical explorers such as Beck, Pink Floyd, The Flaming Lips, The Beatles, Ween and even Tom Waits, RIYM find a freedom in the unrestrained possibilities that experimental pop music can offer.
