Hailing from Sydney’s Northern Suburbs, Passive Escape is Doug ‘Duug’ Costin (guitars), James ‘Nikko’ Nicholson (bass), Dave Schneider (drums) and Geoff Schneider (vocals). With influences from an expansive array of genres, the four-piece combine complex bass and drum-driven riffs with melodies and gritty guitar to create what some have described as heavy, melodic, atmospheric progressive metal.

Forming circa 2002, Passive Escape came into being when James and Doug began writing material and approached the Schneider brothers to form a band. The four had been friends for a good 4 years prior, and although all shared common musical interests, they did not actively consider forming a band until this time. The boys rehearsed on and off for a period as some of the members took time playing with various other projects. In some of the initial incarnations of the band (under various other names) there were other members on guitar and bass. It wasn’t until mid 2004 that the band finalised the line-up to be the original four.

Dave and Doug have been studying drums and guitar for 5 and 6 years respectively, James had previously studied guitar, but has focused on bass guitar since 2004, and Geoff has been singing for a large part of his life, as well as learning bass and guitar for 2 years.

Passive Escape was born, and the foursome began to concentrate on writing and planning the recording and release of an EP. Their plans were realised mid 2006 when their debut EP was recorded by the talented Jamil Khuri and mastered by Rick O’Neil at Turtlerock Mastering. Boasting 5 amazing tracks, the EP is due for release in late 2006. Tracks from the upcoming EP can be heard on MySpace and PureVolume.

Passive Escape is currently lining up gigs on the Sydney circuit. So spread the word, and expect big things from this Sydney four piece.
