From the early days of Jet covers and big dreams, to the very first time Liam and Ben played their cover of Britney Spears’ “…Baby, One More Time,” (with a little help from old man Raymond), the members of Neon Dreams (Then The RB Experience/Captain Paranoia) knew that they had it in them to become Hobart’s finest underage pop-country-hardcore-garage-rockabilly bands.

Following a spine tingling three song set in the Sacred Heart College Performance Center, the members decided that the world wasn’t ready for what they had to offer, and gave it a bit of a rest. During this time, Liam and Tom realized that to play in a band they’d need to be able to offer more than tone deaf shouting (Liam) and loosely rhythmic tambourine playing (Thomas), so they picked up a guitar and a bass guitar, respectively. This left Marcus (who had had his preferred position of guitarist/thumping sex machine taken from him by the 14 year old guitar virtuoso Jordan Stuart) to return to his first and only love – the Squier Stratocaster.

For at least two weeks, things were swell. Until one day Marcus’ dedication came under scrutiny from the other band members. It was decided that to play in the band, one musn’t have a social life (and thus better things to do with one’s time), which didn’t fit in with Marcus’ habits of the day, and so they were three.

Having settled on a name (almost), newfound three-piece Gypsy hit the (polish) clubs, (underage pool) halls and (Sacred Heart exclusive) festivals of Hobart. During this classic period, the band wrote and performed such classics as, “Pantomime,” “Stranger,” (since discarded) and “Somebody” (since discarded, then rediscovered), all of which would live in the relative shadow of Ben Blizzard’s timeless funk-pop masterpiece – “Never Dumped A Girl.”

The band enjoyed some success for some period of time, performing regularly at lunchtimes and Battle of the Bands’ for the best part of a year, until main songwriter/singer/guitarist/frontman/artist/talisman/genius Liam Fallon called for a break, due to a rare lack of inspiration and motivation after playing their songs and relaying their message to the hoards for the time that they did.

In early year ten, the band reformed with a new name, new songs, new haircuts and a new Fender Telecaster being born by Liam Fallon, which he received for his sixteenth birthday. They entered what many critics to be their revolutionary period, with the band penning such tracks as “Old Dog,” and “Numbers.” For a period, they were joined by second guitarist Fabian Brimfield and his flaming Les Paul Special, and though he contributed guitar lines and ideas still used today, lamentably, things didn’t work out.

Then, on the 23rd of November, through the sweet memories, bitter regrets and numbing indifference of high school, at the Sacred Heart formal, Marcus McCrae was accepted back into the fold, and haven’t looked back since.

In the words of old hand Ben Blizzard,

“We’re the rootin’-tootinist crappy garage band Hobart has to offer!”
